cleaning vintage leather

Started cleaning an old leather jacket and it started turning a lighter brown from dark brown. I stopped because I thought maybe I was removing the patina. The jacket has wrinkles and the dirt oil and grime are in the wrinkles making the wrinkles stand out. This may or may not be a good thing. I'm wondering how people treat there old jackets here. Is the grime bad for the jacket over the long run? I'm thinking they might embed into the wrinkles causing those areas do decay faster than they should. I was using a leather conditioner/cleaner.

The grime probably doesn't help the leather any, and the cleaning, assuming you are using a gentle cleaner, probably won't hurt it any.

The only leather I ever feel the need to clean is my English tack. It gets dirty from the horse and the galloping across the countryside. I clean it with Belvoir saddle soap, which is high in glycerin content and then follow up with a conditioner, if needed, when dry.

If you clean the jacket, let it dry and finish up with an application or two of Pecard Leather Conditioner.

Oh, and welcome to the Lounge.
