Check out my $3 Stetson!

I picked this up from a guy who sells junk out of a storefront under his house, here in Fishtown, PA. It's a XXXXX Stetson cowboy hat that's definitely seen better days. I'm thinking about trimming the brim and bashing it into a fedora (diamond or center-dent, perhaps?)

Anyone have any thoughts on the age or ideas for modifications?

Your images won't show up because they don't end with .jpg but rather with .jpg?=123124234. Just cut away the questionmark and all characters after that and your images should show up just fine.

For a $3 hat, regardless if it was a Stetson or not (though, that's just icing on the cake) that's a pretty good deal.

Looks like a 70's vintage from the color of the sweatband, and a solid buy!

Nothing wrong with that hat that a good brushing (cleaning? maybe...) and blocking wouldn't cure. You probably could cut the brim and make a nice fedora out of it.

Try it as a wide brim fedora 1st. Then you can trim it if you must.

Thanks for all the advice, on mods and photos. I think I will try it first as a wide brim fedora, though I might need to trim a bit to get rid of one nasty stain which is, thankfully, close to the edge.

Nothing against campaign hats, but I'm not sure how I could turn my Stetson into one of these:

My first order of business will be cleaning the sucker. Every time I poke it, a cloud of dust flies out.

Oh, and I almost forgot: the guy who sold it to me said the hat reminded him of a joke. A boy comes home from school crying. His mother asks him what's wrong, and he tells her all the kids keep teasing him and saying he has a big head. "Honey," she says, "that's ridiculous! Your head isn't any bigger than anyone else's.
