Cheap Suits on Ebay

I'm scrolling through the suits on ebay and see item after item stating "1500 dollar suit for 300" or some such. Naturally my BS meter goes off, but they certainly look nice and have the tags of the top line suit makers.

For example. This suit looks very nice, but I have a hard time believing it to be 1500 bucks worth. Unless if fell of the truck, I can't imagine how they get these suits and sell them for a profit.

Here is another one (2200 suit for 300?). And another one. And Another.

How is this possible?

Also, any opinions on either of these suits (i'm also considering picking one of them up, though buying suits before I put them on makes me wary)

Edited to remove live auction links. - Feraud

The Hickey looks legit; the quoted retail is pretty close to accurate, I'd say.. Note that the Oxxford does not actually have tags. The Ralph Lauren is a "Lauren", and thus a diffusion line, not blue label Polo. You can pick up Laurens at TJMaxx, etc. Hickey and Oxxford make it to mark downs at Filene's basement, Century 21, etc. There are also jobbers who buy out of season items or sellers who buy directly from stores.

Generally, be very wary if you're buying designer goods (eg, Armani), but usually something like Oxxford or Hickey is going to be legit. The market to fake them just isn't there.

Take a look at sellers like armyhardhat for Brooks Brothers items, grapevinehill for shoes and theworldsfinest for high end luxury wear. Also Virtual Clothes Horse is a good source for high end luxury wear at (relatively) cheap prices. I have no financial interest in any of the sellers just listed.

Another source for suits would be Sierra Trading Post. They have a very generous return policy.

Here's how it's possible.

You're looking at suits that have been used. The minute that a suit stops being deadstock (unworn), it falls sharply in value.

You're also looking at suits that have probably been altered. In more than a few cases, they've been considerably altered.

Use + alteration = steep drops in price.
