Don't know if I could bring myself to read it - all the stories I've heard about Changi, while sometimes inspirational in terms of personal courage and enduring human spirit, are desperately sad.

One of the most moving experiences I've ever had was attending an ANZAC day dawn service at the Changi War Memorial - must have been 1988. Not only were there POW survivors, but also a couple of the few remaining WWI survivors who were alive at the time and who joined us there. The RAAF organised a flyover.

The gate that was built by POW's at Changi was relocated to just in front of the HQ building inside Bassingbourn Barracks just north of Royston, Herts. I know it well and have walked under and around it many times.

I try to visit Changi when I'm in Singapore. It is a very moving place, although little remains of the camp.

Kranji military cemetary is another evocative location that is worth visiting.
