Thanks all.
Seabass it is lite-felt.
I think it will do well for all kinds of temps and weather in SF, except for medium/hard rain.
I sprayed it with water as I usually do with all my hats and it held fine generally, except in the area of the brim where I was holding it, pressing with my fingers. In pressed area of the brim the water seeped through, wasn't dripping, just formed a wet spot. But then it IS lite-felt.

My FAVORITE SWEAT OF ALL TIME!

I put a 1.25" leather Ranger/RCMP type band on this & can wear it as a taco  when in San Antone' & then snap the brim down all 'way 'round for the real world. I love it.
One of the very few brims over 3" I feel at home in.

Last night I stumbled on what appears to be a pair of Caxton Open Road clones in my size.

Caston Band.jpg
Caxton Brown.jpg
Caxton Grey.jpg
Caxton Liner.jpg

I picked them up for a grand total of $64 including shipping, hoping that they'll be decent everyday hats, but I can't find much on the Lounge about this maker. I've seen a couple of Caxton Twenty models, and a Ten listed elsewhere, both with wide ribbons, but nothing on this type.

Does anyone have any additional information on them? I'm sure they'll be decent beater hats if the felt is damaged or worn in places not shown in the pics, but I'd like to be pleasantly surprised with some good quality hats when the package arrives next week.

As an aside, I lean toward the WAR style, so these will be the first truly thin ribbon hats I'll own. If I decide I want to change out the ribbons, what's a ballpark cost of getting them swapped out by one of our vendors, possibly along with a cleaning and re-block to a teardrop?

Just received a package at work, so I figured I'd share some pics. Both hats appear to be identical, aside from color and condition of sweat - the brown seems to have a better quality sweat. Both appear to be unworn, and have no mothing. The brown *does* have a couple of small spots at the front of the brim, but they look like they'll brush out.

Tag inside the sweat of each.

Reorder tag. Trademark issue here?

Liner, as seen in the original pics.

Union label. Best shot I could get in either hat.

Couldn't find any other markings or tags in either.

Going to hit them with some steam tonight to set some creases if possible.

Did you say in the other thread that you got these for $29 each? Great score! Do you guys with normal sized heads find these kind of deals a lot? I never find a vintage 7 1/2 without paying a heck of a lot more. I have better luck getting a 7 3/8 and placing it on the hat stretcher (my usual solution).

Enjoy the Stratoliner clones! The colors are fantastic.

Well, we came out of a severe weather warning at the office a little while ago. Everyone grabbed their essential items and gathered in the middle of the building. I grabbed my laptop bag and my new grey hat. Got a few strange looks, but I *just* took delivery, dang it!

beautiful Caxton 40

something about it screams 40s to me ... but I am no Caxton expert
It might just be a 1940's , Anthony. It has the yellow barrier between the sweat and the liner.... I've seen that on other hats but I think they were early '50's. Wish I Knew more about the brand. It's got great felt . It's like a Strat with a wider ribbon.

Just got a pair of these Caxtons which are identical except for size.

I have always thought they made a great hat. I had one that was one of the nicest felts I had ever felt. They are well made with a nice hand. Hard to go wrong. I think this is a mid-fifties hat. 2 1/4 inch brim, 4 3/4 inch bash, shark gill ribbon.

They are really special Adrian! The condition looks pristine. Are these going on the block?
