Hey everybody,

I picked up this Cavanagh on the 'bay a while back, and only now did I find the time to snap a few pictures and post it.

It is my first Cavanagh fedora, as well as being my first definately stingy brim fedora. The money spent on it was money well spent in my opinion, the felt is extremely soft to the touch, and could probably be easily hand bashed to a different style if the owner so desired.

One of the reasons I considered picking up a Cavanagh hat is because of something inherent in them called the 'Cavanagh edge' despite the fact I love this hat, I really don't have too much of an idea of what a Cavanagh edge is, if anyone would fill me in, it would be greatly appreciated.

The hat box, decidedly a bit fancier than the standard Resistol or Dobbs fair, when I first saw it, I thought to myself "...now there is a hat that was considered a step up in the world!"
The liner was in fantastic shape for the hat's age, showing it to have been barely worn at all, a few little spots here and there, but nothing cleaning couldn't probably fix.
Overall, I was very much pleased with my purchase, the seller stated in the auction that "...a similar hat today would be in the $300-$400 range..." that might be laying it on a little thick, but it is still a swell hat!

Enjoy your Cavanagh! I acquired one in an antique shop over the summer, and absolutely love it. Everything from the quality of the felt to the sweatband...

Good catch!

Cavanaghs are great hats. And from the looks of it, you picked up a gem of one.

The only thing I'll suggest is that you snap the brim further over; that is snap the front half of the brim down, not just the very front.

That's a great find!

One of my first purchases on eBay was a lot of four stingy brim Cavs, all from the same owner. I still need to post them. They're slightly too small for me now, but I hope to be able to wear them with a bit of stretching.

Cheers,
Tom

Great looking hat

This type of edge, called the Mode Edge on Stetsons, is similar to an overwelt with the exception that the edge is first sewn down then felted back into itself. The threads, holding the edge down, are removed during the felting process. You should be able to see slight imperfections, in the edge, where the threads used to be. It's sad that hats are no longer produced this way, since the edge treatment is very smooth.

I have a couple of stingy stetsons that are very similar and love em.
Enjoy the hat, you've got a winner.

Love the stingy brim. I have an old Royal Stetson, I guess it qualifies as a stingy brim. Sick of the Norton comments tho...did he even wear a stingy brim ?

nah. Ed Norton was responsible for the return in popularity of Stetson's Sidestraddle Snollygoster model! The color was called "Cesspool Brown."
