So---this is my first post, though I have been 'lurking' for quite a few months.
It started about a year ago. I was looking for a good quality winter jacket to brave the Connecticut cold. I had settled on a Barbour Bushmen in waxed cotton. I liked it, as it certainly seemed great quality, but I just could not get used to the fabric. I moved on to the Barbour Beaufort in wool—it seemed to work better, and was a bit warmer. But, I had noticed that the Bushmen in leather seemed really luxurious, at least via the web. This was much more of an investment, but it worked out well. I then found the Beaufort in leather too, and on sale in the UK, so all of a sudden I had a little Barbour collection going.
Through all this, it just got to be a lot of fun waiting for the packages to arrive at my door---it really seemed to add a little spark to a dull Winter.
One day, cleaning up the basement after a Nor’easter challenged our waterproofing, I came across an old ‘bomber jacket’ that I bought just after college. I remembered that I really wanted something truly authentic at the time, but there was no Internet in the late ‘80s (obviously) and finding out those sorts of things was not easy.
So, through the miracle of Google, I found that what I wanted was an A-2. Then I needed to figure out which was best—everyone seemed to claim that their jacket was. That is how I stumbled upon the Fedora Lounge. The fund of knowledge you all have never fails to impress me!
By March of this year, I had decided on Aero, and also took the advice of many and emailed Mark Moye. He really made it easy—perhaps too easy! In the world of addiction, I guess he would be the consummate ‘enabler’---but that is not really my area.
I was impatient for something, given the lead-time with Aero, and got a US Wings signature series A-2 in goat in the meantime. Nice jacket for the price, very comfortable, but I had hoped for something that felt more substantial and authentic from Aero.
I was not disappointed—a month ago, my first order arrived: an Anniversary jacket in seal brown with berry knits, and something I had cooked up myself—a Long Half Belt in cordovan, sans front breast pocket, bi-swing back and pocket flaps. The Royal Stewart lining really complimented the jacket and it was a nice, clean look. This was my first exposure to FQHH---wow! Sure, a bit stiff at first, but as many of you had noted, it is like a suit of armor. You feel almost invincible.
I happened across a used Barnstormer in my size on the Aero Scotland website and got that a week ago, but things really got feverish after that. I am waiting for Mark to deliver a 1756 in russet with mid-brown knits, and a Cheyenne in cordovan with Black Stewart lining that Aero just brought back.
To have a decent pair of shows to go with it, I also had ordered a pair of penny loafers from Alden, in what else, shell cordovan. I am waiting eagerly for the latter three.
Now, my normally patient wife is seriously wondering if the fumes from chrome tanned horsehide are somehow addictive. She has threatened to call the men in the white jackets to come take me away in the middle of the night to a leather rehab clinic, if she can find one. If they show up at my door, I will just rap them on the snout with my rolled up issues of Classic Style.
Anyway, thanks (I guess) for all the great info, and I hope I can hold this bug in check before it does some truly horrific damage…but, because of all of you, I may now know too much to ever go back...
