A question- were campaign hats purchased in this distinct style or developed as a result of being exposed to the elements/handling?

Does anyone have a reference photo of a new hat or catalog image?

I like this one...

Me, too, R. And actually, the brim up all the way around is looking better to me each time I see one of the photos.

To answer my own question..
As far as I will assume, these are not campaign hats per se. This photo shows what are apparently retail civilian fedoras with the distinct crown shape we are discussing.

I have an old department store catalog that might have another example or two.

This does not answer whether the military purchased their campaign hats from a standard retailer or a particular military supplier.

Feraud,
Your photo, which I love, has in it what I have been attempting to reproduce...fedoras that have the Campaign Hat look. It's the crown crease that clinches it. I like it and prefer it to the "cattleman's" bash which for some reason doesn't appeal quite as much. The Campaign hats, my guess, were issued open crowned but Pat H. has posted links to his Society of The Military Horse website that provides a great thread on Campaign Hat specs from Army documents. The fore and aft was regulation, but clearly latitude was allowed, which led to the M1911 "montana peak" we all know as the smokey hat, and I gues very little variation from then on until the hats' role was diminished to DI headgear.

I would guess they were open crowned, flat brimmed and definitely weathered as well as "customized" in their shapes. I wish I knew of pictures of an unissued, or brand new original one!

Hey Dean

Here is something that may be right up your alley. In a conversation about hats the other day, the topic of bash types came up. Seems there are some that claim hunters and maybe soldiers used their hats to rest their guns on, thus resulting in a type of bash depending on the way the hat was positioned. Could this explain the campaign hat and the front to back bash. It might make sense, the bash looks to be about the size of a gun barrel. [huh]

Bud,
that's the first reasonable explanation I've ever heard for the tight bash of the old campaign hats! It makes sense! A sharp shooter tripod using your hat. Why didn't I think of that? Thanks a bunch. BTW am still trying to get that little hat project together for you. Haven't forgotten.
