Its been in my wifes family for a long time, and I'm curious about it. I'm not wild on the frame, its my daughters idea to fit her bedroom.

It is signed in pencil Virgil 20.

Any ideas, or suggestions on who to ask?

Thanks

Hi Talbot,

I'm afraid I can't help with the ID, but just wanted to ask about condition.

Is that foxing on the Background of the pic? If it is you might want to seek out a paper restorer in your area.(Particularily if it's a family heirloom, valuable etc).

Obviously keep it out of direct sunlight , if possible hang on a wall away from window, so no light falls against it.

I've bought a couple of Gouache pieces which Australian collectors had, and they were both badly light damaged. The UV light in your country is very strong!!

Hope that may help.

It's also a good idea to replace the existing glass or acrylic in the frame with UVA acrylic. UVA meaning Ultra Violet Absorbing. That helps further protect the artwork. Even if it's out of direct sun there is often UV light inside a house, especially from fluorescent lamps.

Can't help you with the artist though.

And that's why I don't buy fluorescent lighting... I have one fixture in my bathroom and kitchen (I rent my house) and they stay off most of the time.

Incandescent is better light for your eyes and art work... and gives your home a lovely, healthy, warm glow.

Rufus...

I'm thinking that its foxing and will need to be dealt with.

I'm not sure if its valuable, but there are a few (sorta) valuable paintings in my wifes family and an artist that is pretty accomplished (down under), so I'm not sure of its history.

Thanks for the info all, much appreciated.
