Can anyone identify Toscanini's hat?

I doubt it has a particular style name, at least today.
But, man, what a great hat. What a great look. What a
great photo. Thanks for sharing that.

I wonder if I could get Optimo or Art to make me one of those?

Fedora in the 1800s?

Toscanini was born in 1867. Given the look of the photo and
the apparent age of the subject, I'd guess the photo is from
no later than the mid-1890s. Is it accurate to call a hat from
that time a "fedora"?

That's one odd block... and it looks like the top tapers more
than a fedora blank?

BTW, the wide ribbon seems to have been fairly common in
Italy at the turn of the century, to judge from photographs.
