Campdraft vs Stylemaster for dress wear?

I have the hat bug bad it would appear. As I anxiously await the arrival of my fawn Campdraft, I see a need for a proper dress fedora for wear with suits, usually dark grey, navy, or lighter grey. In your esteemed opinion, is the Campdraft more casual and the wider ribbon and overall appearance of the Stylemaster more "dressy"? I have a large, rounder head (7 5/8) and am a bit concerned over the Stylemaster being "enough hat" for my head.

Look at the Akubra CEO in Cruiser Grey. It has about the same brim as the Campdraft but with a broader ribbon for less casual look. Dang good deal, IMHO...

I'm having the same mental battle. I'm deciding between a Campdraft in taupe fawn vs. a Stylemaster in acorn fawn. The truth is I wear a suit or jacket virtually every day, so the Stylemaster makes more sense as I perceive it to be more of a dress hat. As an aside, I am medium height (5'8") with a large head (7-3/4) and a tall crown / wide brim hat like the Campdraft makes me look like a kid wearing his dad's hat. I don't imagine the SM to be too little hat.

As they are currently such a deal, I am thinking I will add a navy stylemaster to my order for use with gray and blue suits. You might consider that, or mid-gray - check out Gilgamark's picture of his new SM in mid-gray midway down the page here (if you haven't seen it already). He looks like a tall guy and the hat looks great - I think it would work well with the suit colors you mention:

I'll probably be getting a gray Capricorn for summer while I'm at it, as they are really inexpensive. Cheers, Carl

There are lots of Stratoliner ads that show men in suits. So thin ribbons didn't necessarily mean casual, though they appear to have targeted younger guys.

This Stylemaster is sitting atop my 7 5/8 head. I think the Stylemaster is enough hat, but I prefer my Campdraft 'cause I'm more of a thin-ribbon sort of fellow.

Is that the stylemaster in the acorn fawn color?


I agree that the Stylemaster is plenty hat. At just 5'7" and a size 7 3/8, I am dwarfed by a dress hat with a wider brim or taller crown (although I have field hats that have up to a 3" brim - better for shade from the sun).

I think the guy in the Fedora Lounge Logo chose a Stylemaster. I'm another lounger torn between the two, and will probably put my money toward a Capricorn and save the felt purchase until fall when the decision will present its dilemma again. I lean toward thin robbons, but like the Stylemaster's "smooth" lines.

Didja notice I typed "RObbons" instead of "ribbons'? I try to proofread my posts, and missed it entirely. This is happening more and more. I really think I will go Campdraft, R, and mainly because thin RIbbons just look better to me. How about a Style master re-RIbboned thinly? Plus, for some reason I can't really be comfortable with crown taper. Must be the old M1883 Campaign hat side of me or something.

Well, card, no, actually I have re-ribboned several mid to low crown Huckels back when Burlington Coat Factory was infested with them, RBH has one that I messed with, adding brim edging as well. He did his own re-ribbon on the hat he calls the "Wildcatter", and indicated that he simply liked the taperless quaity of the Wildcatter hat better. I agreed. I think you'd like the results if you don't mind tapering. Check this thread:
