Buying dress shirts - collars?

From time to time I buy white dress shirts... generally when they're on sale! For a classic, 40's type look, what kind of collar should I be looking for? I tend to think in terms of the "long pointy collars" (obviously I'm a little limited in my vocabulary!) - that hides most of the tie knot, but am pretty clueless beyond that. I'm honestly/sadly more concerned with budget than true authenticity, but again, I like the classic look. I have one shirt with a collar that's kind of squared off so shows more of the tie knot - pretty sure that's not what I'm after.

Are there any descriptive terms re: collars I would see on the package that would tip me off? Thanks!

I know this is an older thread (well, three months...), but I'm interested in this too. I would like to acquire a dress shirt in this style, or similar, but for a reasonable, cheap price.

Dress shirts ... just dress shirts

Just read this thread. I think there is almost everything you have to know.

PS: The collar that shows more of the tie knot maybe a shark or windsor collar. If you buy long pointy collars make sure they have a curve. If not they might look seventies.

Be advised, tho, a curve on the bottom edge is generally a forgotten nicety, so such shirts will be hard to find.
Yeah, that's whats makes them even more desirable I think. If you see someone with a nice pointy 30s collar you really know he took some effort to get this.;)

I got only 2 and it took a long long time to find them. One is custom made from my girlfriend and the other is from ebay.

When I tried some at the vintage stores in Berlin or Prague they always were too short at the sleeve. They weren't that expensive though. Around 30€ (~ 40$) in Berlin and 180 Kronen (~10 $) in Prague.
