All leather jackets with buttons attached and held on the jacket by threading thru the leather have a tendency to either pull out of the leather or be attached so tightly to the leather they are difficult to use.

Here is the time tested method to solve all the problems:

Here is the pocket button attached and finished

The backer button:

I use the extremely heavy twine used for leather projects from Tandy or any leather project company to replace the thread and thread thru the same hole. Then make sure the button is spaced far enough off the leather that it will fasten and unfasten easily

Here is the finished project that the buttons will not come unattached without tearing the leather pocket off.

Good to know. I just picked up an awesome custom horsehide jacket with cossack collar and cargo pocket buttons off the classifieds from fishmeok.

The buttons seem to be very secure at this time.

My (very new to me) vintage 1950s N3-B was missing a couple of buttons and the eBay seller very kindly sent me a few replacement buttons - and I came across the back buttons like this too for the first time, as I could feel that the jacket has the back buttons and they're inside the lining, so unless the lining was going to be opened up, hiding them wasn't an option - so I added them just as shown above and they match the lining and look the part anyway - and yes, as Louis says, it's one TOUGH repair! The material will fail before the thread does!
