I watched Notorious the other night. Cary Grant wore a button-down collar shirt throughout. I was surprised to see him wearing one with a pinstripe flannel double-breasted.

Of course Cary can pull anything off, but I thought that was a faux pas.

faux pas, eh? Well, some might tell you so. Sounds like one of Ms. Post's more ridiculous proclamations (there are many).

There are an awful lot of books and magazines out there that will tell you difinitively that they are correct in matters of style (the vogue books spring to mind). Most are self-obsessed blow hards. They make up rules (mostly pointless balderdash) to sell books. Other than colour and pattern combinations, most of these "rules" turn out to be false.

Check out pictures of the Prince. He broke every "rule" in the book ... and still was one of the best dressed men in history ...

I don't really give a rip, personally. If Cary was wearing it, I'm sure it looked pretty decent.

Cary Grant wore buttondown shirts all the time. So did Fred Astaire. Grant was criticized for having his buttondown shirts made with French cuffs. Such "formal" cuffs, some argued, did not go well with such an "informal" shirt. Grant didn't give a hoot.

Ol' Cary was also know for preferring plain, solid colored ties. No patterns, please.
