Hi there,

Anyone living in/ near New York. Advice please.
Looking for a real budget backpacker/ hostel-type accommodation for mid Nov.
Can anyone recommend anywhere?
While there, would like to visit Cockpits store.

Thanks

The Chelsea hostel is just a couple of blocks from me. I have no firsthand (or even secondhand) experience with it, but it seems popular enough and well-kept (judging from the outside).

"We provide bed linen, but not towels ".......Odd that.....

Naw; they don't provide locks for lockers, either.

Seems they provide the essentials but you have to provide your own accessories. Because you're renting a bed, as opposed to a room, you're getting linens as part of the deal, but nothing above and beyond that.

Sorry, but if I pay for a: "Private Single Room With Bathroom: private room, sleeps 1 person in a twin bed, private bathroom," I expect not to have to bring my own towels. Seriously, who travels with bath towels?:eusa_doh:

The Montreal HI provided towels when I stayed there in early September. Linens too.

If you're really that freaked out about it, stay in a regular budget hotel. I can stay in a Days Inn for about 40 bucks/night more than a private room at a hostel.

I am reminded of my grandfather admonishing me not to waste my school's money on our Model UN trip. He was furious that 4 of us would share a room which cost 100 total. He said, "you should stay in 'dollar hotels'. Ah well, I suppose those times are long past. It was a lot cheaper for 4 guys to split a room, even cheaper than most hostels.

If you don't mind a reasonably short bus ride you could stay in a motel out here in NJ for not much more than the rates of that hostel. I'm in Teaneck and I can be in midtown Manhattan in less than 30 minutes and Harlem in less than 15 minutes. The location of where you'll be spending your time is important. I'll be going to the west village this weekend and I've calculated it out to be about 1 hour from here.

If you're just going to be sleeping you could stay in Newark which has some nice, very accessible to NY hotels. Newark isn't the greatest hangout spot but you can get in and out of NY pretty easily and the cost isn't bad. It's also easily accessible from the Newark airport. This place looks like a good option to me at a price that's pretty competitive with that hostel.

Yeah, there's that. Although, I would be tempted to bring a towel if I planned on staying at a hostel. And maybe even an "over sheet". Naw mean?
