Bows take a bow

It's been a bit since this thread. I have a question. How does one get that fraid look on the open end of an angle cut ribbon without it un raveling. I've used light fabric glue on the back of grosgrain but I know there's a better way. Is it the type of ribbon?

Rumor has it that the frayed ribbon edge on bows (common in pre-1940 hats) displayed the quality of the ribbon used. Not having worked much with ribbon, vintage or otherwise, I'm not sure the requirements for fraying without unwanted disintegration. I'm sure there are others on the Lounge who would know better.

We don't appreciate the finishing of ribbon and bows enough I think. Once you try to do something like this yourself you realise how difficult and fiddly it really is. This one is mindboggling.

This Emerson has one of the more interesting bows I’ve seen lately. It vaguely resembles a puggaree but it’s not. The wind trolley button is decorative only as there isn’t a string.

This is a European hat marked “Derby Paris, London New York.” The only other marking is “Antilope” on the sweatband.

I really like how the top of ribbon at the front of the bow is folded over and the the bottom is folded at the back. Very clean and streamlined.

If your Collins & Fairbanks is half as nice as mine, then you have a real winner. I picked mine up today for the first time in a while and I swear it felt more like a Forty hat than a Twenty that I first estimated!

It certainly is a wonderful hat. High quality and very grand dimensions.
