Hi Folks

I am thinking to upscale my wardrobe with a boutineer every Sunday.. I like the flower/rose in the lapel look.
Thoughts and opinions are welcome.
Best regards.

It can be a very elegant look if done right in my opinion. Wear it with a suit/tie or sports jacket/tie combination where the flower compliments or matches the tie but is a different colour to the pocket square. Red or burgundy carnations are good because they work with most colours.

Then just wear it without thinking about it too much. :)

I may add that when ever you do wear a flower on your lapel, take some care about what may be around the back side of the flower that may touch the material of the lapel. My Husband wears a lot of off white, ivory colored and lighter colored suits and sports jackets. The color of the flower and stem a few times, did some bleeding into the material. This even happened with the florist even added some sort of a "backing" to the flower. What we came up with was to use a small piece of plastic wrap to put around the stem, to give some added protection.

You used to be able to buy a tiny vase that pinned to the back of the lapel, to keep your boutonniere fresh all day. It would also protect the material from stains.

Do a search for tussy mussy. They are mentioned here on FL in various threads.
Also, both antique and new tussy mussy's can be found on Ebay.

Unfortunately the boutonniere holders that tend to be available are those awful gaudy things that are typically worn at weddings, or the kind of dreadful little rococo monstrosities like the one worn by Suchet's Poirot.

Rather more wearable ones sometimes come available where the vase part is behind the lapel and the only metal visible being a little lip to hold the vase into the lapel buttonhole.

Of course the wearing of such a vase requires a lapel that can handle the weight and a loop of silk on the backside of the lapel is required to hold the stem or vase in place.

Very good point.

Would it be gauche to wear an artificial flower?
In the store at http://www.gentlemansgazette.com/ they have a wonderful selection of silk boutiners, those are the best artificials I have seen. If you get one from somewhere else be sure it isn't made of synthetics, that is when they are incredibly noticable. I have seen leather ones worn to make some sort of "statement", but they are made to be obviously artificial.

Wearing a real flower may sound nicer but indeed it can look bad within a few hours, not to mention the possibility of getting clothing stained or it not 'sitting right'. I would check out the ones on the Gentleman's GAzzette link above.

CCJ did you ever recieve my PMs you asked me to send you few months back? they are on my 'sent' folder but do not think you recieved them
