“The U.S. Army launches an all-out fashion offensive,” A Sears corporate press release quotes an unnamed Army spokesman extolling the new line for melding the “Army’s timeless traditions with iconic styling.”

Charles Horner, a retired Army officer now working for Murtha, isn’t happy. He served with the 1st Division in Vietnam, as did his father in World War II, including landings in North Africa, Sicily and Normandy.

“That patch is to be worn by only people who served in the 1st Division,” said Horner. “What right does the Army have to sell our patch?”

Ed Burke, president of an association for veterans of 1st Division’s 28th Infantry — in which this reporter served in Vietnam as an infantry medic — is more philosophical. “Surprise is what I hear most — and not knowing what is going on,” he said of the reaction to the Army’s venture. “[Defense] didn’t talk to anyone.”

As a general rule if Murtha is for something I am against it. On this one he is right. Whats next? Will the eagle, globe and anchor show up on the crotch of J.C. Penny jeans?:rage:

I'm a bit torn between the two sides.

On one hand, I can understand why the fighting men of the 1st ID wouldn't want their unit patch plastered all over consumerist clothing. It would be dishonorable.

But looking again, much of the money made will be going to charities to help soldiers and their families. Also, what's stopping anyone from going to an army surplus store right now and buying a patch to stick on their clothing?

Honor comes before profit, but isn't supporting soldiers through charity honorable as well? [huh]

As a kid in the 50's and 60's I and my pals would sew our dads' military patches on our baseball jackets. No one had any problem with that.
Likewise there are still many folks who wear hats and shirts with FDNY or NYPD printed on them in memory of 9/11(exactly 7 years ago today, RIP to the victims).
