I personally think that a black shirt white tie would look extremely costume-y.

I would have thought light solid coloured shirt and colourful striped or patterned tie would look nice.

I quite like these:

I'm inclined to agree with the above - a black shirt runs the risk of you looking like something out of a High School production of Guys'n'Dolls. Of course, if you're specifically looking for a deliberately costumey look, it might be an option. I'd be inclined to stick with white, myself, and let the tie / pocket square give you the colour element.

I agree with the above posters. White jacket with black shirt and white tie looks like cheap mafia. Not that another tie's colour would redeem much that, as I see it. If you really want a black (or another dark colour) shirt, I would suggest no tie, and an appropriate square pocket.

The more classic (and dressy) combo would be a white, or pale-coloured shirt, solid or with a subtle, subdued pattern, with a tie darker than the shirt, and, in my opinion, preferably patterned (as seen in the above pics).

Blackjack referenced the look for a swing band. A costumey look in this case might be acceptable.

I recall Fletch posting pictures of bands wearing matching outfits that showed dark shirts with light ties.

I wouldn't go for a black shirt. And you all want to wear the same tie too? What a waste of possibilities. Some colorful 40s ties could make it look more real.
But if you already decided to go for one pattern I would suggest red with white polka dots.

No, we don't have to have ties matching at all. I'm stuck in a rut here, besides white pants ( actually I'd like to go with off white jackets) I never thought of anything but the basic black pants...

I think a solid royal blue shirt with a golden yellow tie (ideally with a blue diamond or small dot pattern) would work well with white. Trousers wise - I've always been a believer in "you'll never be wrong with grey flannel" - though a dark charcoal may be a better bet in this instance

Aren't blue shirts a little too "blue collar" for a stage outfit? Okay, royal blue is rather strong. But I stay with white or bright shirt colors. Just my taste I suppose. The tie would be enough color in my opinion.
...
With cream trousers it would have even more summer look.
