Beaver Brand impressions?

I have an old BB that started out as a western. I actually bought it at a local dry goods/hardware/sporting goods store.

It was not a better grade, rather cheap in fact. Thick and stiff and never did fit right until I wet it and reformed into a fedora style. It now serves as my cold weather beater hat, not pretty, but functional and comfortable.

Well, I went ahead and took the plunge on a custom hat. I ordered a small brimmed outback/western from www.cowboyhatsandmore.com. $199.99 + shipping.

Fur Blend: 8X
Color Charbrown
Size: 7 3/4
Crown: Center Dent
Brim Size: 3"
Brim Style: Pecos
Brim Edge: Raw
Trim: 2 Cord Band

I'll post pictures when it arrives in 4 or 5 weeks. :D

I’m sure you’ll like it Riot Earp. I’ve been wearing my Beaver Brand around quite a bit now, and it’s definitely the most comfortable hat in my collection. I really wish I had the funds to immediately order another.

BJ,
Thanks for your very thorough review on the Beaver Brand. I had thought about doing the same type of thing but never got around to it. The hat looks very classy and 30's vintage.

Thank’s Hatophile, I missed your comment earlier. It was a fun project.

Today I gave the crown a beating for about an hour until it would start taking crunched up shapes, steamed it and lowered the rear points of the diamond to give it the side rake it was missing, and worked some more on the front pinch which I could now get pretty tight. Quite a bit of reverse taper in the front now that I pinched it good. Now I’m torn between getting one in banker grey next year, or getting another white with a smaller underwelt brim and a navy ribbon.

When I get another, I’ll try and post a video to show how stiff it is as you work with it. I’m surprised they are not a bigger hatter than they are; I wish I hadn’t wasted all that money over the years on my modern Stetson’s and Biltmore’s.

Hi

I FINALLY got to take a picture of my Beaver Brand hat on my way to work. I wear my black hat with my black leather jacket. It seems to work o.k. even without the blank beard. I don't get Indiana Jones comments with it at least.

Hatman Jack cut an eighth inch off the brim, and Levin's in Saint Louis put the tear drop bash in it when I bought the hat a couple of years ago. Personally, I think that the crown is a little short for me.

I just got a Beaver brabd cowboy hat off of ebay . The seller said it was her father's hat . Probably never worn ,,,I don't know to much about cowboy hats, but I have bought sevseral vintage fedoras. The seller said that her dad bought it in Arizona when he lived there between !950 and 1970. It is charcoal medium grey with a skinny ribbon. It is 5x beaver . Kinda siff . Has a teardrop crown . There are no numbers under the inside leather sweat band. Like I said ,I haven't handled to many felt cowboy hats. The brim is a kinda "u" ,like the old 50"s westerns . Soooo,,, how do I tell what year the hat was made ????

Thanks again. I will work on my Avatar picture very soon.
The hat is very firm , but the felt is soft.
Damn, take a step back and listen to us hat lovers! It's firm, it's soft,, it's shiny and glistening!
Oh well, I love it.!

I know you said between 1950 and 1970, but it all looks more recent than that. If I had to guess, I’d say 1980s or ‘90s. I’m not claiming any expertise in dating Beaver Brand hats, but I’ve owned over a dozen as well as that many more again that were store brands made by Beaver Brands.

You could try posting the photos here and see if you get a better response:

I will have to try and dig up my original post. But here is mine that looks like it came from the same family tree.

The seller on ebay said that her father bought hats and jackets and never wore them ,saying some jackets still had their tags on them . She definitely assured me that her father bought the hat while he lived in Arizona between 1950 qnd 1970 . BUT, it looks like it was purchased in Aspen. But that doesn't mean he wasn't on a trip then. The band does have Aspen on it ,but there might be an Aspen ,Arizona. It's all got me swingin'.

Beaver Brand hats were decent, well made, workaday hats. In terms of value they are not coveted as collectable vintage hats and there are lots to be had on the used market. Wear the hat, enjoy it but don't hold high expectations as to it appreciating in value as a collectable.

Plus, they seem to run the gamut. I've seen some pretty nice ones and others that were pretty low quality.
