BTW, Salty, what color is the liner in yours? Looks black or eggplant, but I can't tell.

It's black satin, with the logo in gold. I noticed yours has a black pinstripe in the center of the bow that mine doesn't have.

I took the G.B. out today. It passed the rain test with flying colors, and I noticed the rain loosened up the stiffeners in it. So it's more comfortable. The only affect the rain appeared to have on it was to make the hat look frizzier. I'm not complaining; I'm sure I'd look that way too, if I were made out of sand colored beaver fur, and was put through a rain storm. Order was restored to the nap by a quick brushing, which did cause some shedding. Quick question: what direction do I brush the underside of the brim-counterclockwise, also?

Cheers,

No, the underside should be brushed clockwise.

What possible difference can the direction of the brushing make?

For lack of a more techical term, you want to brush with the "grain" of the felt, not against it. With any felt hat, and especially with suede/velour/pelouche finishes, you should brush counterclockwise on the "up" side and clockwise on the brim's underside.

Try it and see.

I brush both ways to grab big dirt but always finish in the direction of the nap.

The nap direction is determined by the direction that the felt is processed through the spinners, wringers, smashers, smooshers, smoochers, etc.

Save your pennies

Hello all, I just purchased a Beaver Brand fedora and was wondering if folks would be willing to chime in and give me there impressions and likes/dislikes with these hats. I am saving my pennies for a hat from Art, great hats! Till then Beaver brands will have to do.

Personally I would save my pennies for an Art hat and then save my pennies again for another one. Buy a nice vintage fedora, wayyy better value.

I know I'm a bit late on this one but I'm in the UK and bought a Beaver Brand hat from the states... Given the cost, 8 week waiting time, plus shipping, plus customs duties, and having to send the hat back (another £27.00) due to not fitting properly (says 7 1/8 and I'm a 7 1/8) as in the hat was very tight in the front and back, and had a gap on the sides... plus glued on hat band, and a knot in the stitching of the hat band that hurt when you put it on... I won't be buying another one. I would much rather find me a custom hat maker and have one like Trace Adkins wears in his concerts. Till then, the Stetsons have been very good for me and it's what I'll stick with till I find something better.

Are you aware that 7 1/8 UK = 7 1/4 US? If you wear 7 1/8 UK you ordered one size too small. Otherwise you may require a long oval size. Did you get a Western or dress hat? I have no experience with their Western hats but I have three dress hats from them and have been pleased with all three. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience.

I would think there is some mechanism by which you can get a refund of the duties you paid if you can prove you returned the purchase.

Beaver Brand Factory

Hi

Beaver Brand's Factory is not all that far out of the way for me when visiting my parents. Has anyone been to their factory / store? I was hoping that they have an outlet like Stetson does, and that I can look at their colors etc. I have an 8X Stony River that I've had trimmed, flanged, and re-blocked into a passable fedora. I'll try and remember to take pictures this weekend. I bought it at Levine's and like it pretty well. I've only worn it a couple of times. It's still in the 80's here most days, global warming and all that. :)

Thanks

My impression of Beaver Brand by looking at the sites where they are sold is that I am attracted to the hats, but have held up from buying because the pinch in front seems a little tighter than I like. It's a little narrow. Otherwise on price grounds I would have bought one by now.

Just a thought... I'd bet thefedorastore.com would offer the option of an open crown. They seem to be all about factory custom, so it might be worth asking them if it's possible.

You can get open crown on their full-price BBs; on the in-stock clearance ones you have to take the c-crown (although you can specify that it be less stiff). But it should be easy to steam the crown open and then change the bash.

Fedora Store has a good sale going on until the end of October - 20% off. I just ordered from them.

Can you post some photos of this? From where did you order your Beaver brand hat? The only place I know that sells them is thefedorastore.com. I was thinking about ordering a Whippet-like hat from them, but now I'm a bit trepidatious.

RE:

Salty, I wasn't aware of the sizing difference here in the UK, but me being American and not seeing these hats here in this country (UK) I've bought the hat from an internet site in the states, and I ordered a 7 1/8 as well as having a 7 1/8 in a Stetson previously (which isn't as tight as I'd like but a 7 is too small)...and I think you are right about the long oval shape.
As far as the hat band, it's the F807 and I bought it from a guy in California who to be fair is doing everything he can to make me a happy customer. I'll try to find the pics I sent him originally but I've noticed Stetson stitches their hat bands rather than the glue... glue just looks really tacky and a shame for such an expensive hat.
