BBC Radio 2

Brian Matthew continues to celebrate the golden age of British dance bands, throwing the spotlight on different bandleaders each week.

Last week was Jack Payne and Henry Hall.

This week it's Carroll Gibbons and Ray Noble.
Both men were elegant sophisticates, both led HMV's New Mayfair Dance Orchestra, and both composed successfully. Brian Matthew tells their sometimes intertwined stories with the help of music; the archive words of Noble and others; and observations from Michael Law, the leader of today's Piccadilly Dance Orchestra which continues to keep the music of Gibbons and Noble alive.

NOTE: Unless you have a radio downloader, you only have 7 days after broadcast to re-listen to this show before it is taken down.

What is the year range that they are looking at for these broadcasts? I have only heard a little bit of the British side now and then and it has a certain sound that makes it different and interesting.

Late 1920s to early 1940s. I'm a big fan of the 1930s British stuff; I'd say it was generally 'dreamier' than the US output.

Turns out there was at least one earlier season of this program, too, with at least five episodes.

I sure would like to get my hands on the entire series -- I'd happily pay for them.

I tried the usual downloading avenues to see if anyone has recorded them and is sharing them, but no dice so far.

I'm trying too. If I find anything I'll let you know.
