I heard Bette Midler say that when she started in show business she'd send a 20's head shot of Barbara LaMarr for auditions and shows instead of her own picture. I can see her doing something like that.

Yes, Barbara La Marr's fate was typical of many Hollywood stars from the teens and early twenties (like Alma Rubens, Wallace Reid, Mabel Normand and many others..) they just couldn't cope with their fame and fortune.

" ...they were determined to live their own legends to the hilt ... the excesses of the stars developed a cynicism and defiance characteristic of the Jazz Age youth ... bitterness and darkness often lay just beyond..."

And despite all that , I'm totally fascinated by those lives and times, when Hollywood was young. :D . I've already read many of their biographies. I'd love to read next Barbara La Marr's .
