Bangs and glasses

Sorry if it would've been more correct to search for two separate threads to ask my questions in but I thought I might as well shortly cover them all here.

Bangs - grow them out? Re-shape them? Just get them trimmed like I usually wear them which is higher at one end than the other with an upward curve?

Glasses - My face is very round. Do you think I can wear 50s retro glasses?

you loook adorable, I think 50's cats eye glasses can suit anyone - they came in a variety of shapes from very round to long and thin so hink the rounder style would suit you.

personally, I was growing out my bangs until I went to a retro hairdresser who cut them back in, but long. What kind of hairstyles do you want to learn?

At first I was adamant that I was going to grow my hair really long again because I thought the 1930s, rural housewife look was my thing and I wanted to be able to make earbuns. I still want to grow the back out long enough for ponytails, curling the bottom ends and chignons. I don't know what end length that will be. I'd like the sides, bangs and top to appear more "polished" and I like my bangs shorter than what's fashionable.

I have a round face as well and I think longer bangs that aren't heavy and sweeping bangs work the best with us. The Cat eye glasses would look fab on you as well as more angular shapes. Avoid circular glasses of course that emphasizes the the fullness. Hope that helps!

Bangs - I think your bangs look lovely as they are, but hair is fun to play with and of course nothing is permanent. Experiment a bit of you feel so inclined. You may be very pleasantly surprised, and it not, "Time heals all wounds."

Glasses - Almost more than any other piece of accoutrement, glasses are very personal and I would never buy a pair without either trying them on or knowing that a very good return/exchange policy is in play. As has been said, any style of "retro" glasses, even a very specific one such as Cat's Eyes, will come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes so there is certainly a pair that will flatter your fair countenance. I have a site bookmarked (too short on time this morning to find it, perhaps later?) that allows you to upload a picture of your face and then "try on" every style that they sell.

I'm not an expert on glasses, but they're definitely not the extreme cat's eye glasses. I think of cat's eye lenses as being extremely elliptical (wide and short), with the frames increasing the width. The "shortness" of the lenses in comparison to their width would emphasize a round face, by contrast.

However, the lenses of these are a very pretty shape, just enough elongated to make them different, and the frames add width and interest (and height at the upper corners - also a cat's eye thing) without being extreme. I like them!

They're my favorite of the two because they're more retro-looking to me. The second pair are very similar, but in a modern way that's only vaguely retro. Your choice!

Definitely play with the bangs. I've had them all my life (different reason from you - long, narrow face with a high forehead) and by both cut and style they can change a lot very easily. They do grow pretty fast, too, if you accidentally get them too short - I do this all the time. I think a shorter, non-modern bang would look cute on you, and showing more forehead would make your face look longer. (Trust me on this! ) But you're really cute even now! I think anything you do will be cute on you.

Lillemor, I have a roundish, squarish face too, and I wear glasses. I find that hairstyles that give a little height and keep my hair off my face work best. I get the most compliments when I wear my hair up.

Your hair looks thick and straight (like mine). I have to be careful that I don't have any fullness at the jaw, which would make my face look wider. And smooth curls look better on me than fluffy ones.

Cat-eye style glasses look good on me too, but I wear kind of a modern, toned-down version instead of a more obvious style.

Uhm...I would tell you if I remembered. I did a random google image search some time back and just saved all the ones that might be interesting in style but I re-named them all. Sorry!

In the past I've had long bangs that weren't blunt but had the appearance of being straight and they interfered with my glasses within a few weeks of being trimmed. Could someone post a photo of long bangs, that'll work with a round face and not get caught in my glasses?

Okay, for glasses I need to ask for retro styles that are slimmer and more upward and stay away from the roundish ones?

Buying new glasses usually involved 3-4 visits to try different frames on at the eyewear shop. I never make light decisions on something I'll be seen with every day

Yes, my hair is thick, straight and won't easily be manipulated I've just booked an appointment with a hairdresser who comes highly recommended and she's a more mature lady than many of the hairdressers around here.

So I may take a print out of the top style of glasses with me and tell her I intend to buy something like that and I'd like something that works with that. Tell her what I want to be able to do and I hope she'll advice me on which bangs and overall cut works best.

But if she doesn't, I'll appreciate any more advice and photos of either glasses and hair are welcome That way there's less room for misunderstandings.

It's sweet of you to post but it says I need some log in details.

I've been told I can't wear semi-rims because of the high perscription I need. Higher perscription = thicker glasses regardless of what type of glasses I choose = need full rims to hold the glasses.

This is a very simple straight-cut bang I do myself; it may not do anything for you. The bang parting is a shallow V, not straight or curved. The key thing for me is curling it neatly. The bang was pretty long in this picture, and only by curling it was it bearable. I don't wear glasses, but I hate my hair being in my eyes or over my eyebrows. My high hairline means that my bangs aren't very thick; yours can be either thick or fine. Your hairdresser will be able to layer the bangs a little, giving it a little more volume and looking even better when curled slightly. And it really can be just about any length. Shoo Shoo Baby has a very short bang that looks cute; you can see her wearing her new dress in the last page of the Show Us Your Purchases thread.

If my bangs get anywhere near my brows, then they begin to get caught under my glasses and that's irritating and geeky in the uncool way!

I don't think the optical shop can sway me towards more contemporary glasses. I'm really hooked on finding a pair that of course flatters my face but also in the very least has a resemblance to something 1950s retro.

My arms hurt terribly now. I haven't used curlers in ages and I was just curious about how my bangs would like if I curled them under a large curler and some smaller ones for the whispy ends around my face, I tried some medium sized ones at the 1/3 bottom of my hair. I only have the cheap velcro type curlers the supermarket has and they don't seem to do more than give a slight bend and fullness but I think I could get used to doing something like that

In a strange sort of way, I looked really cute with my bangs rolled up under a large curler but the curl wouldn't hold. No, I didn't take a picture and I wouldn't dream of posting something like that on here!lol

Curlers actually look pretty good in my hair. The result they leave, leaves little to desire though.

But Since Paisley said her face shape was similar to mine but I think hers looks much slimmer I decided to try to style my hair like hers. So far, so bad! I tried to take some photos with my mobile. I can't wait for hub to get home so I can upload them and show you how it turned out.

I had to cheat because I didn't have enough curlers, no product aside from an old hairspray, no clips, no parting comb, it wasn't easy so my hair only turned out relatively well.

I think I want to show the pictures to the hairdresser and ask her to cut my hair so it's easier to set and holds curl better. They're already sliding out now 15 mins. later

Maybe some setting lotion would help? My bangs are naturally curly; that's why I have to curl them deliberately, or they'll be WILD on their own. I haven't been able to really get a curler in them; I've just used a curling iron. But then, I'm always in a tearing hurry and lack patience to do curlers the right way.

When my hair is wet, I use firm gel (KMS) on the hair that I curl to hold the style. I also use hair paste (Paul Mitchell) along the hair line and a little ways back, at and near the scalp, to get my hair to go back instead of towards my face. Then I use a curling iron. Thanks for getting back on this. This really helps. I'm buying a curling iron! That way I'll have no excuses for looking like a washed up mop!
