one element of g-1s and a-2s i've never heard addressed on the LounGe here, except obliquely when referring to rushed or poor work quality on original ww2 a-2s, is that of pocket spacing...

i see quite a few, if not most, a-2s and g-1s with some sort of pocket spacing variance from 'perfect placement' if such a thing exists...generally seen by the space between the bottom of the pocket and the seam where the fabric ribbing attaches under the bottom of the pockets...

i've seen many jackets with the pockets not horizontal, different spacing on one side or the other, or from one corner of a pocket to the other...and a lot of times i see this on jackets that are beautiful, higher quality manufacturers,,,not just ww2, but post 87, or vietnam g-1s...and on the forum here i'll see praise for a jacket and notice the pockets have some spacing problem...

is this something that's just accepted as a given? about the most i'd like to accept on a more modern jacket (not ww2 vintage) would be what is shown in the jacket below, from another thread here on the LounGe...wondering if i'm being just a bit tOO precious>>>

FriDay night, after a feW...

well, you've answered my question a bit...using the criteria of evenness from the bottom of the leather, your pockets look pretty nice...but looking further up the jacket, they do seem to be at odds with each other...

maybe on this jacket they were concerned with getting that bottom spacing even and...oh weLL...BuT actually, it just looks like the pocket on the right side (camera right, jacket's left side) is taller...

Uneven pockets were actually a "feature" of some military contracts.

These 2 Army pilots, Charles Howard (ca. 1932) and Ken Walker (ca. 1937), are both wearing the Security Sportswear 32-485, the first known A-2 contract, recognizable by its button-flap pockets.
Note that the the left pocket on each jacket is slightly deeper. This may have been done to accommodate a pen, flight computer or other such gear.

This is the first G&F AN jacket I have seen in the flesh. The Few makes a repro of it, but their pocket sizing is more or less equal for both. I am wondering if this is a flaw in this jacket or The Few copied it incorrectly.

very interesting stuff...finally a discussion about something prevalent, but that i'd never seen discussed here before...

the 'few' (never heard of this, is it a repro co.?) seems pretty close to most jackets i see, kind of just a miniscule misalignment

however, fletch's info is fascinating...you can't stop learning around here...it looks to me like the jacket i referenced at the top of the page is indeed done intentionally...otherwise the taiLor had one too many margarita's...that's one too many pints, not glasses...

hoping to hear more info on what people think of what seams (puN) to be one of the most consistent areas of 'flaws' in g-1/a-2 jackets...or rather than flaws, one might say areas of 'character'
