Awesome family info!!!

I found out that my great-great-great grandmother's brother was named George Crawford Platt. He is a Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He was a Sergeant in the Union Army. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a Private in Troop H, 6th US Cavalry for action on July 3, 1863 at Fairfield, Pennsylvania. His citation reads "Seized the regimental flag upon the death of the standard bearer in a hand-to-hand fight and prevented it from falling into the hands of the enemy." The Platt Bridge in Philadelphia is named after him.

Wow, how exciting for you. I do not have anyone that remarkable in my family. Do you live anywhere near or have you visited the bridge? That would be so neat.

Very cool!

I've only heard two stories about my Civil War era ancestors. The Ohio River separates Ohio (Union) from Kentucky (Confederate). There was a Confederate officer who would parade his soldiers on the Kentucky side of the river. My ancestor supposedly said that if that officer continued to parade his soldiers in view of the Ohio shore he "would shoot the son of a _." Well, the officer did just that, and my ancestor did just what he said he would. Although the bullet didn't hit the officer in the head as intended - he was only hit in the foot. But his foot didn't heal, and he died from gangrene, and my ancestor was given credit for killing him. I have no idea of the truth of the story, but it makes an amusing tale.

The other ancestor was a deserter. Twice. Wish I knew more about him.
