I found my preference is the Raw Edge, but I also followed your journey of your photos and purchases of the Agnoulita hats. Most of what you showed photos of had either an edge ribbon or welted. that made me question whether my attraction to the Raw edge was limiting the life of the hat?

Nah. While brim edge treatments can provide some structure, it's not that big of a deal. Raw is just fine.

Mostly the brim edge treatment is cosmetic. A bound edge can provide some tension and keep the snap in a snap brim, the over/under welt gives some extra weight and helps hold the form, but mostly it’s just whatever you want. I do like a nice raw edge too and I own several. I think a bound brim can make a hat more dressy than a raw edge. My favorite is the felted or Cavanagh edge; when done right it adds some serious gravitas to a hat.

I don’t think any brim treatment makes a hat more durable and the raw edge, due to its simplicity, is often less expensive and more rugged looking. Some hatters, such as Agnoulita, don’t charge more for any of the brim edge treatments so why not experiment? With vintage it’s catch-as-catch-can.

total relief to have that understanding shared.....I am going to go the custom route with a few hat to test myself on what to ask for of Agnoulita hats to start.....a more affordable way to experiment. I have enjoyed getting exposed to all the options of Fedoras and numerous names of hat makers discussed. Will share the journey as purchases happen as a thanks to the forum.

I really like felted edges. IMHO, it keeps the brim shape a lot better.

Obviously I’ve liked Agnoulita well enough to order several. That said, I think you might be better served with a domestic hatter if you are just starting out. My last Agnoulita was $160 w/shipping. You’re knocking on the door of a Gannon or Phoenix at that price. Agnoulita has colors and finishes not readily available domestically, but you’ll be much happier with a Gannon or Phoenix or ???

I really don’t want to come across as being down on Agnoulita, but you need to know what you’re getting. The quality difference between them and, say Gannon, is very real! Having said that, I’m looking at buying two more Agnoulitas: Dark Olive rabbit fur felt in antelope/suede finish and a forest green western in standard rabbit fur felt.

I have a bounded wool Bailey's Curtis, Raw Akubra adventurer, Raw Stewkowski Mosca. I can see your point. The Akubra is obviously w/ higher quality product (Fur vs Wool) but the brim welt does give some strength to the wool that is missing in the Akubra Fur. Sterkowski was a test case.....no need to shame me to much on that. Wearable and comfortable but not much to talk about. It has a very flimsy brim.....which I just recently wrinkled it when it left my hand and bounced on the floor......oh well, live and learn.

I was targeting that dark olive with antelope......please share a pic or two when it is received. Gannon is from Oregon correct? I have looked at them online.....I'll have to look a little closer.

Gannon is indeed from Oregon. I just placed an order (fedora in Bone) and the queue is only 8 weeks! Gannon’s website isn’t much to look at, but then you can call and talk with Michael and the two of you can design your hat. You can be as involved as you want or you can leave the details up to Michael. My problem is that once I’ve committed to a custom from Gannon I start thinking...for just $75 more I can get it in 100% beaver....

Now, if you just have to have an electric blue fur felt fedora then Agnoulita is your shop!

Gay Prince is a specific Dobbs model, yes. It's the most well known of this style of hat, but had a whip stitch brim. Stetson also has the similar Tijuana.
