As I said, this was the first time I have worn this hat in the heat. The discoloration is mostly along the stitching and is completely hidden by the ribbon. As I look at it tonight, I think last night's cleaning had some success, but you can still see the affected straw in the photo. View attachment 126364

Ok, now i see the concern. It doesn’t look all that bad and is hidden by the ribbon. I think i’d just monitor it for worsening and wipe it off after times of heavy use. I know anyone hates to see stains and marks but some are inevitable. Nice hat by the way. Enjoy it!

Hope the kids know CPR (for Pops). I think it’s 10 compressions to 1 breath (this year). Good luck!

I just took the CPR course again a week ago (mandatory every two years), and it's back to 30 compressions for two breaths for adults, and 15 for two breaths for children. They change it periodically, just to justify your having to take it again I suspect.

Yeah, I feel like a screaming little kid over some really small stains. They are hardly noticeable, but the hat is immaculately white and any discoloration is visible. Coincidentally, I have a new ribbon ordered. I think when it arrives, I'll tackle the stains again. What do you think of the idea of applying a water repellent after the cleaning?

I wonder if a drop of tooth whitener would do the trick... I am a dentist. If it can bleach a tooth... Just buy some Crest whitening strips and put a drop of the gel over each individual little stain with a pointy instrument. What do you have to lose? Rinse and repeat as necessary.

Ps: idk about repellent. I have used Original Crest on light colored ribbon sweat stains. Old Marine Corps trick. Worked great.

A GOOD Resp Therapist will work those breaths in between compressions no matter what compression rate and still hyperventilate the heck out of the patient no matter what the Red Cross et al says that year!! Pet peeve!

Yeah! I kept asking about that, but the "instructor" was annoyed. All my life I've noticed incompetent teachers are annoyed with questions they don't really know the answer to, and try to make you think they are annoyed because your question or opinion is stupid. An expert welcomes such questions because they take them a little out of the beaten path.

So I have this Stetson Vitafelt western hat. It’s a brand new hat, I’d like to clarify that since there’s also vintage Vitafelt hats.

On the inside it says “VitaFelt Crushable Water repellent 100% wool”

Now my question is, how reliable is this statement? Is the modern VitaFelt actually water repellent, even though it’s wool? Or is it only water repellent if I treat it with a special product? Is there anyone in the Lounge who has experience with modern Stetson VitaFelt?

Just finished watching all 5 seasons of Boardwalk Empire, WOW. Great hats. I noticed in many scenes that even when it appeared to be cold weather, everyone wearing long coats, there were many gents wearing straws. I was surprised actually how many straws I saw in that series. Some really great ones too.....

I have one. It’s strong and they’ll make them to custom dimensions. I had mine made at six inches tall. I applied a lot force and never had any issues, but I was always afraid that one day I’d break it. I placed a piece of PVC in the middle for a spinner and I filled it all with Quikrete. It makes a cheap block and in its current condition I have little fear of it breaking. It probably wasn’t necessary, but I felt better with the modifications.

Sounds like a worth pastime to me.

Boardwalk Empire was a historically well researched show.

Six years ago, The Brooklyn Museum of Art curated a wonderful exhibition entitled "Youth and Beauty: Art of the American Twenties" which I saw at the Dallas Museum of Art.
