Johnny thanks for the info, I looked at the Playboy you suggested and it deffo fits the bill. I also like the Bates Burlington Trilby Bitter Brown.

My question for you Johnny would be how high do you think the Crown would be if it had the bash depicted on their site? you think it would knock it down to about 110mm? more or less?

The ones you have pointed out are all center creases. As I said before I don't think you should have them lowered. 5 1/2" is just enough crown to do almost anything you want with it. Center crease, diamond, c-crown teardrop. Anything less than 5 1/2" and it just wont work. So long story short, yes you can get a 110mm finished height with a 140mm crown.

One thing most people getting into hats do is buy a low crown. Once you get used to wearing hats you will realize it doesn't quite suit you. What you do is measure from the center of your eye (that black dot in the middle) to the bottom of your chin (with your mouth closed) that should be the height of your hats finished crown (after you have bashed it). Look thru the pictures on the "what are you wearing today" thread and you can see what I mean. Use a ruler and you will see the hats that really suit the face are typically that dimension.

Also if you buy a good quality hat that is custom made or comes open crown, as long as you don't put a tight crease in it, you can easily adjust the crease to be higher or lower to suit your face.

Unless you're looking at an open crown hat, the height refers to the creased height.

More pedantically, there is no such thing as an "unbashed" or "uncreased" height on a hat which has a blocked in crease.

I would say bashed size. I would consider that a short hat.

Not sure what eBay delivered today. This not the hat I was expecting. The felt is dark green velour and the overwelt brim is just over three (3) inches wide. The crown measures 5.75 inches or maybe just a little over. The hat shows no signs of use, but it smells like it’s been in storage for a long time. The sweat is soft, thick, and very supple. The ribbon is a little wonky like another hat was stored on top of it. The crown has a substantial amount of taper and a great hand. A factory Borsalino hang tag is still attached, but here isn’t a size tag at the back of the sweat. The strange part is that there is a standard foil sticker on the sweat listing the size as 64 cm or 8 US; however it fits me. I don’t mean it sort of fits my 7 5/8 long oval head, I mean it fits me perfectly. There is no way this is a size 8. Now I don’t know what to do with it. It’s a soft floppy velour hat with some odd proportions. I’m thinking about reblocking it with my #52 block and just wearing it. Any ideas on what model it is? I’m worried that I won’t be able to sale it due to the uncertain sizing issues. What think ye?

I’ll add that to my reason not to go to China.

I have a long hair and a roll-up Borsalino that both fit true to size. If this is really their size 8 I’m astounded.

Every Borsalino I have had the pleasure to own is smaller than the stated size. A couple clicks smaller on a couple of them. It does not surprise me that this one fits being larger than you usually consider "your" size. Also, this is a real beauty, the color is rich and full. Not sure of the age, probably will get some hits over in the Brotherhood. Congratulations!

My issue with the hat is that it’s a floppy mess that can’t hold its shape. I’ve never felt the desire to add stiffeners to a hat before, but this thing wilts under its own weight. It’s also a winter only hat. I might get around to doing something with it, but I’m not very motivated. I like the hand, the color, and the brim size, but the “personality” of the hat has turned me off. Maybe a good hatter can make this into something I’ll like.

Anyone happen to have a 22 1/2" hat block in a dome or modified dome open crown with a 5.5" to 6.5" height, LO, they would loan me for three days in house. #151 or #152 open crown blocks would be prefect. Happy to pay priority postage both ways and some rent? I also have access to 100% beaver blanks if that helps sweeten the deal I am in South Western Idaho.

Looking to make Everett Hitch's classic hat for a buddy and don't have a block his size.
