Deep in thought....
I'd stay with the 60 and use sizing felt/tape in it until it shrinks to the size of your head. I'm new to hats, but have learned the hard way that it's much better (for me) to have a hat that's too big than too small. It's much easier to shrink a hat than it is to stretch one. I now buy all of my hats one size larger than I need. I'm a 58 (7-1/4) and buy a 59 (7-3/8). Over time, all of my hats have shrunk. Using this method I have a nice collection of hats that are very comfortable.

I've never had good results with stretching a hat.

Hello
Firstly isnt it a bad idea to move my questions to one giant thread with 370 pages where they'll be lost in the clutter and mostly ignored, probably by a majority of people with opinions that would help me? Can you please move them back.

Second google has no intelligence.

You've just arrived. Don't tell the bartender how to run his place ;)
I was surprised as well, but that's how it's done and it works. See how many answers you've got already. And if it's intelligence you're after fmw's blog is quite good, and you could do a lot worse than spending a little time browsing through.

jOshtafarEYE, have you tried baronhats.com? They have a lot of movie reproduction hats.
Hi, I came to this site a couple of days ago in attempts to find a particular hat and after a few days and lots of help from the community I think I am pretty close!

Anyways, here's the picture:
32829-24486.gif

Sadly it's only a partial picture of the hat, taken from "The Mummy" movie(first one) worn by Mr.Henderson. If you have the movie and would like to check it out in all it's entirety he wears it only in the beginning, on the boat, and when Hamunaptra reveals itself for the first time.

Details; from speculation and other peoples opinions.
-Looks like a neat outback/western style
-Lowered Crown
-Pinch Front
-Raw brim approximately 3" size

Finally, if anybody knows anything about where I can find this hat I would greatly appreciate any help you can offer.

Better to have 1 thread where folks know to go look for or to give answers than a new thread for every question that cause pages & pages of 2or 3 item conversations, some of which are pointers to existing posts.
Also, you can set your preference to show latest posts first so when you select the thread, you go to the most recent items.

Advanced searching on the Lounge is not that bad. Between that & Google, I've been able to find lots of interesting reading especially about sizing Akubra hats & the Fed4 specifically.

Akubras are great hats but they do shrink no matter what anyone tells you. Always buy an Akubra one size too big because it'll always shrink down to fit you perfectly. The only Akubras I have that still fit are the ones that were too big to start.

I'd echo that. My Fed IV needed a good bit of padding when I first bought it a couple of years ago; now it is snug and could possibly use a slight stretch. I bought a 59 cm, even though I'm probably more like a 58. It has been a great go-to hat, summer or winter.

I would agree with this except for the Campdraft models. Order it in your size. It runs large & will come back to your head nicely.

New to forum, with hat question

I like vintage and old-style hats, and as such, I was looking for a straw hat that sort of matched the felt hats worn by my grandparents that I remember as a kid in the '70s. Attached are photos of family that somewhat exemplify what I'm looking for. I want to use it outside while I work, but I'm not looking for a Panama or some kind of gardener's hat. Admittedly, I know very little about hats, hat style names or the terminology used to describe them.

My search lead me to a Stetson Open Road in straw, which I received in the mail, new, two days ago. I opened the box, donned the hat, and after my wife quit laughing, I believe the word she used was, "goofy." Ergo, here I am, seeking assistance.

Although the straw OR has a 4" crown, it looks like I'm wearing a ten gallon hat because my face is somewhat squat and round. So I guess what I'm after is something akin to the OR in straw but with a shorter crown. Can anyone direct me to a maker or to a style of hat or brand I can search for on eBay?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

It's hard to match a hat to your face without a picture of your face.

I don't know of any OR style straw hats that are smaller than Stetson's dimensions (which themselves are already smaller than say, an Akubra Campdraft), although others may be able to chime in.

That having been said, I would also suggest to you that you take some time to get adjusted to wearing a wide brim hat, if you're not already. I thought my hats looked "big" on me too at first, but don't really seem them that way now.

This is a typical Open Road style with the Alpine/Cattleman crease but is the older dimensions. There are lots of clones out there for many years.
Modern ORs by Stetson via HatCo have a lower crown than this.
The straw version is of this lower crown size as well. Not sure you are going to find something even lower crown than that.

Given your facial shape, a factory cattleman crease of the straw OR could be too broad for you.
You may be better suited for a tycoon/teardrop type crease.
You need to find what suits your look over what suited your grandfather.

Almost forgot, welcome...there is a thread for intro's & one for getting questions answered up in the stickies...
