thanks for the reply, was just curious because i got a new shearling jacket and was sort of worried i was allergic to it (was itching in some areas, also got a runny nose but it's probably just the weather) however i wore that one with the mouton collar for 12 years straight (it was a hand me down from my dad) every winter without any adverse reactions so i think maybe i'm just being paranoid.

Yeah if you’ve had wool against your skin without issue I can’t imagine that was it.

is it possible to have allergies to sheepskin? if so, what would they present themselves as?

Tree pollens have started in Vancouver, I started getting itchy eyes and sneezy nose since last week, nothing major, happens every year this time.

If you’re getting skin redness or rash from contact with sheepskin then stop wearing it. But I’m quite sure it’s not it but just mild Seasonal allergies. You can get an allergy test they drop drops on the skin and if it reacts with a red bump you’re allergic to that.

Tobacco? The vintage chest pockets are not big it’s hard to even get more than three fingers in there. Some were lined for that purpose too.

3 months is not bad compared to BC, the wait has gotten a lot longer in recent years…

Does anybody know what type of fabric this lining is made of? I'd prefer to avoid wool since it's not so hot where I live.

Also do the scrapes on the arm/shoulder look like surface marks that will come out with conditioning or full on gouges?

Saw this Johnson Leathers for sale and it has very interesting measurements. All measurements are good but has approximately 22.5 inch sleeves, otherwise a jacket the size of a 52.
Has anyone successfully added length to sleeves? I know the variables, finding a leather match etc. . I reached out to Johnson and am waiting on a final answer. Beautiful jacket but was built for a T-Rex.

oh no doubt. it's crazy. I suppose i am 'lucky' since i have a chronic illness so my specialist is usually available in decent time frames.

you CANNOT get sick in these times. a buddy of mine was suffering from severe blockage and waited screaming in the ER for over 10 hours

Hello. I would like to leave the zipper intact but swap out the pull tab for a ring chain pull. I’ve looked online but keep finding videos about replacing the whole pull. can anyone please point me to a tutorial about getting the pull tab off without removing the whole zipper pull? There does not seem to be an obvious way to bend the pull or the tab area to allow me to slip the tab off. I really don’t want to break the tab or ruin the zipper. Thanks!

Some sources describe the method of, for example, placing a leather jacket in a hot bath until it is completely soaked and then drying it under the direct sun or using a hairdryer on a hot setting - the idea behind it seems to quickly dry a soaked leather .
Can leather really shrink like that - what to expect?

Are there any other methods. I'm asking because I want to make an old horse hide leather jacket a little shorter and less baggy, but I don't want the sleeves to shrink.

This is an Aero steerhide, does it look like it's made of chromexcel and what kind (brown or natural)? Also this is a 50s half belt pattern? I'm interested in buying the jacket as a test jacket before I go custom.

I think Buco changed the label after 1951 to the 3rd label. The J-72 is a J-71 with a mouton collar and no zipper stop. J-65 is a J-71 without epaulet and half belt. So not really just a change of numbering.

I think there is a huge risk that the jacket will not shrink uniformly and will be ruined by hot spots from the hair dryer. I know they shrink leather in tanneries to accentuate the grain, but that is differrent - the leather is in a sheet form and can be shrunk uniformly in industrial, controlled conditions. Not so with a jacket. It is much easier to stretch it than to shrink it!

Where are you getting that from?

I know the books are full of mistakes but I don’t believe that to be true.

Only in 1953 so you see an advertisement for nylon.

The J-23’s have the second tag and the black rayon lining btw which are super duper rare and I’ve only seen one maybe two pictures of one.

This indictates that the second tag was after 1951. I also own a transitional J-22 with wool liner and third tag as well, so who knows, but I at least believe the years they are specifying that these catalogs are from.
