Are all people color-blind in these days?

I often have conversation with my mother about (for sure) my vintage style and which colors match.

For example:

Yesterday I wore my Mallory(mid-brown felt, yellow/khaki ribbon) with a grey coat and she asked me if I'm realy going to go out this way. I just said: 'Why not?!'. She told me it wouldn't match and said that brown and blue do match, too, so why not briwn and grey?. Then she rolled her eyes and went away.

Can it be that the view of matching colors changed so much in 60 years?[huh] ;)

Henrik

To pick a nit (and I may be wrong).

Brown and blue (and grey) don't "match", they coordinate. That is, look good together (or at least don't clash) although they are different colors. Coordination goes beyond just color but also texture, tone/hue (variations within a color), style/formality and on and on.

Matching a navy jacket would require a navy hat of similar tone.

Coordinating with a navy jacket can be as simple as avoiding a black hat (in most instances).

I concur, Baron!

Incidentally, brown and BLACK can also work, in my experience.

There's black (or very dark something) in the weave of those browns. The shoes can pick up that color to coordinate. And they aren't a gloss black leather and the fabric isn't a fine weave either, so the suede texture can "go" with the nap of the fabric.

But I agree, black and brown aren't necessarily bad. Especially when the black is just on the accessories; shoes, belts, etc.

You wouldn't put those shoes on with a brown belt would you? [bad]

It's about coordination!

For women, in their world, it's about matching... in ours, matching does happen but for accessories like shoes and hats... it's to be a coordinating contrast.

If one wears brown with blue, it's very tough to get the right shades that look the best together. A medium brown fedora paired with a dark blue suit would kind of clash where as a light brown fedora (more tan then brown) would work with a dark blue suit. And the same applies if the suit was light blue, a dark brown fedora would work.

My self, I wear gray hats with blue suits... I'm not so keen on brown hats with blue suits.

Gray does go with brown however! They're both neutral colors however, the same rule applies, dark with light and light with dark... that's the best way to go.

Exactly my thoughts! :eusa_clap lol
After I've seen your replies, I think it really seems to be as I described:
People put there there clothes together different in the golden era!
I personally don't like to wear brown and black together, but hey that's a matter of taste.

Ohh... and sorry, but the 'match'-thing was just me trying to speak english!:D

And I apologize for implying you didn't know the difference between matching and coordinating. I like precision in speech and I like to read my own typing and I sometimes justify my over-explaining by claiming I'm trying to "help those who are afraid to ask questions". :D
