I saw my first King Family Christmas Special when I was five years old.
My maternal Grandmother absolutely adored The King Sisters who had hit after hit in the 1940's. A bit different from groups like The Andrews Sisters, these girls sang rather difficult FOUR part harmonies. Add Alvino Ray to the mix, who married one of the older King Sisters, and you had amazing steel guitar, banjo and just about any other stringed instrument you can imagine. By the time I was old enough to experience the wonderful music of the Kings, the "Sisters" had daughters, "The King Cousins", whom I fell madly in love with. From the mid sixties to the mid seventies The King Family put on over a dozen television specials....from Easter, to Halloween, but became well known for the wonderful Christmas specials. They were incredible...you actually had four distinct groups of entertainment (The King Sisters, The King Cousins, The King Family and the King Kiddies), who would perform separately or together as a large group, sometimes numbering forty people in all. Almost forgotten by me until PBS began airing the King Family Christmas Special 1967, this holiday season. What a warm flood of great memories.
If any of you remember the Kings please share your experiences.
Here is a clip of the wonderful King Family.
