Okay, so I love their accents, their sense of nobility, and their affection for portraying WWII. The recent PBS Masterpiece classic Any Human Heart has me thinking aobut how many (PBS and other) British made films take place during the WWII era. What great British films set in the Golden era do you all recommend?

Thanks!

My first thought was also Brief Encounter. ("I'll have a buttered bath.")
Also: The 39 Steps (Hitchcock version), In Which We Serve (WW II from Noel Coward); A Private Function (rationing in England during the Royal Wedding of 1947); any of the Carry On movies (late Golden Era); Tight Little Island aka Whisky Galore, (more WW II hilarity); The Skin Game, a 1931 Hitchcock drama about a fight over land development versus English tradition, very well done; Three on a Weekend, a 1938 social dramady that is risque enough that it could never have been done in the US.
Others: Passport to Pimlico, more post WW II London in ruins comedy; Blackmail, very early (1929) Hitchcock talky; for that matter, any early Hitchcock, Rich and Strange, the original Man Who Knew Too Much, 39 Steps (as mentioned).
Finally, any film by The Archers, I Know Where I'm Going (gorgeous Wendy Hiller), The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, Stairway to Heaven.
Many many many many more.

Watched Remains of the Day last week - superb acting from Anthony Hopkins. That put me in mind of Brideshead Revisited - not the recent film but TV series - haven't watched that for years and years, must seek out. Should mention Atonement as well, especially the memorable sweeping shot along the Dunkirk evacuation.
