I just got this one this week, picked it up on OFAS for a mere $20, just couldn't pass it up....it was my cup of tea. Any clues as to how old it is? It's a very deep, rich, chocolate brown. Don't go by the photos, the flash kinda makes it look grey. Specs are Crown 4" (very slightly tapered) with a 2" brim and a jet black 2" ribbon (back bow). The bow is kinda curled at the top a bit, probably from the way it was stored I'm guessing. I suppose I can steam or iron it out, but I think I might let it alone, it kinda gives it character.

It came with this teardrop/porkpie-ish type of bash & I like it that way, so I cleaned it up & gave it a good steam & rebash, here's some pics......

Here's the little curl on the bow I was talking about...

Here's a pic with no flash to try and capture the true color.....

I'll get a pic of myself wearing it, it needed a little bit of a stretch 1st, I'll probably post it in the "What hat are you wearing today Thread". :D

bolthead, Looking good! I think you're right about that "curl" at the top of the ribbon. The bow in back probably will be the operative factor in dating it. That seems to have been a short lived style. I don't have a bow in back, yet, but I'm looking.

Very nice find, Bolthead!

I dunno why, but I have it in my mind that the bow in the back was a 50s thing. Might have been something I read around here somewhere.

I just got in a gray Lee porkpie that has a similar bow in the back. My wife doesn't care for the porkpie look, but it's growing on me--mostly because of the great hats you and J.T. have posted! :eusa_clap

Cheers,
Tom

Thanks Tom, I've loved Pork Pies before I discovered this wonderful forum, but now I love 'em even more. I'm eye balling another Dobbs Pork as we speak, cream color, short crown, very wide black ribbon....says it's water repellent. There's only 1 pic of it, but it looks like a beauty, you might've seen it....I'm sure. :D Keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm wondering if that somewhat askew Dobbs logo embossed to the sweatband might provide a clue to the hat's vintage. I have a handful of old Dobbs lids around here, but only one of 'em has that crooked logo. I've seen others, though, but rarely, so I gotta suspect it was something they did only during a particular (and brief) period.
Gotta concur with Tom's guess. I'd say mid to late 1950s, too. But, you know, that's just a guess.

Jack Carson wore a back-bow porkpie in that famous Twilight Zone episode about the used car salesman who buys a Ford Model A that makes him tell only the truth.

The episode was titles "The Whole Truth" and it first aired 20 January 1961.

Great lid, by the way. I love Dobbs.

Thanks Tony, you have a great memory. I loved that show as well. I was thinking maybe a bit older than that, but who knows? [huh]

Well, at least it went to a good home. At least I assume it's a good home, I may have to inspect to make sure, and perhaps even confiscate if necessary! ;) Seriously though, nice hat, and the only reason I wanted it was to confirm once and for all if I"m really a long oval or not. Not exactly my style. But ain't that bow nice? Congratulations :)
