This may be "old hat" to those who frequent the FL, (bad pun realized and intended) but I've recently made several purchases from an online vendor that I stumbled upon called American Vintage Classics, and their sister site, American-Vintage. I have absolutely no personal interest with either site at all-honestly-I simply felt compelled to pass the word along that I have been very pleased with both the prices and the service I've recieved from them, and that they have many items that may be of interest to members of the FL community. You may get there from here:

www.american-vintage.net

I hope my mentioning this isn't against forum rules, sorry if it is.

Warning!

I also made a purchase from american-vintage.net and boy did I have the opposite experience! They had a "40s" sweater I really wanted for a while and finally decided to shell out the $40 for it (ouch). I also picked up a skirt and a headband style hat. The "40s" sweater was not authentic vintage, and had holes in it. The skirt, I wouldn't even bother to put on ebay. And the the hat, though cute was jammed in the box and was out of shape and the veil was torn. I am not new to vintage and am understanding about imperfections, but this was pretty bad. I contacted them and they sent me back a curt note that they would give me 10% off my next order. No sorry, nothing. NEXT ORDER? lol I think not! A friendly warning for what it is worth. I have not ordered from their sister site though I covet many of the items I see there...

I'm sorry to hear of your bad experience with American Vintage. I've done business with them a few times, (always involving trading of goods) and I've had nothing but good results to date. [huh]

Well, I realize that anyone can make a mistake. I would have been willing to work with them on a solution, but it was really the response they gave me when I pointed it out that I just couldn't overlook. It seemed rude and uncaring, not the response I would expect from someone who genuinely made a mistake. I'm glad you have had good experiences with them, but I will not be a repeat customer.

Thanks for sharing that, but I honestly didn't see much difference in their "vintage" men's shirts than what's available today. And what's with the French nude in the men's tie section? Do they think showing a nude is going to make me buy their ties?

Anyway, I first found FL while researching attire for a Prohibition Era (Roaring 20s/30s) party. In the course of browsing the posts, somebody posted a color scan of a 1930s department store catalog. I was surprised to see shirts that were very similar to shirts I've seen in stores today. I went to Macy's, described the style I was looking for, and low and behold, they had some that very closely resembled the pictures in the 1930s catalog. Here's me in the "vintage" style shirt at the "Speakeasy" we rigged up: (I'm on the right).

I have ordered a number of times from both sites, and have always been happy.

You're right, to some extent. Shirt styles really haven't changed much for 80 years or so, since the attached collar became more popular for dress shirts. But for dress shirts: just try finding a nicely sculpted long pointed collar on a modern shirt, other than a bespoke one. None of them have the right shape. I've looked for years, and some get close, but none of them get it right. (I must say, aslo, that there can be no mistaking either of the shirts on your picture as vintage.)

Where the vintage shirts really show the differences is in the sports shirt categories. The fine gabardine rayon and cotton, and the styles, are simply not available outside bespoke.

And the pictures? Well, they're just cool girly pictures from the 30s-50s. A very, very vintage touch. Still find them at the seaside in Britain. I really like them, and think that it makes these particular vintage sites stand out from the crowd. That, and the always higher quality and the volume of truly old stuff they get. Their prices are the most competitive on the web for vintage clothing (other than certain small-time sellers that i won't be disclosing ;) ).

My humble apologies, I didn't mean to disparage the vendor. My untrained and "rookie" eye is to blame for not being able to discern much difference between genuine vintage shirts and similar ones made today (note to self: just look at the tag, "Made In China" doesn't cut it). The nudie just seemed out of place is all. Hey, I have a similar one hanging above my desk, only it's a back shot.

Somewhere here (I couldn't find it) there was a scan of a catalog that showed a shirt with a very similar coloring as the one I'm wearing in the pic, e.g. broad green stripes with a white collar, although other details may have been different. For the purposes of that party, it did just fine.

I ordered from American Vintage Classics back before he (Damon) had a website and just as the internet went public. I think I found him on AOL.

I bought several really nice shirts (including some very heavy and drapy Da Vinci's) from him that I still have. His initial offerings were really, really nice. Lot's of RnR shirts.

His service was always prompt and he used to give away a vintage tie with all purchases.

Of course Ebay changed my buying habits and found it hard to pay a set price.
