Ok. I find myself in the enviable position of having a $50 certificate to Amazon.

In the agonizing process of trying to decide what I want to buy...I wondered what others would buy.

The rules:

Its 50 dollars, no going over.
Ignore the shipping and tax and assorted things, only the selling price counts.

What would you buy?

I chose a cd, dvd, and a book from my Amazon list.

1 - Sammy Davis Jr. At the Coconut Grove $11.98
2 - Ikiru - The Criterion Collection dvd $34.99
3 - The Postman Always Rings Twice (used) $3.00
We can write off the .03 cents.

The only things I want right now are the CDs Hits of '34 and Hits of '26. I have all the rest from 1920 to 1939 -- except those two!!

I'd pretty much stick to used items to maximize my spending, stick to paperbacks and maybe a few cds/movies. A list? Oh no...

I don't want anyone snatching up the cheapies I've had my eyes on lately! :p

I did...and I broke my own rule..I ended up paying 2.65 cents over the 50.

But here is what I got

The Art and Power of Being a Lady
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0802139418/102-8352750-7276102

Lady." Let's face it: the word brings to mind a host of associations‚ many of which call to mind costume dramas or tea-sipping debutantes. That is, until The Art and Power of Being a Lady‚ the book that brushes the cobwebs off and makes "lady" relevant to every girl and woman — whether her role model is Audrey Hepburn, Oprah Winfrey, Madeleine Albright, Lauryn Hill, or Mia Hamm. In an era when looking out for one another and taking the high road is too often lost in the shuffle, today's lady has not forgotten what's important. She is kind and considerate without being a doormat. She's assertive, but never a bully. She is sexy without being vulgar. She has great style but is never superficial. She gives back without asking for kudos. And from now on, the perfect word to describe her is "lady."

Compacts: Powder and Paint
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0764300555/102-8352750-7276102

The application of make-up for women was made more convenient in the 1920s with the popularization of small container known as a "compact". Inside, pressed (compacted) face powder was housed with a cloth of feather "puff" applicator and a mirror for checking the job. In this book, Frances Johnson has compiled hundreds of different compacts of various materials, styles, and values along with delightful stories about girls who did or did not paint themselves up to attract boys. Her direct style is tinged with humor, making the compacts here all the more enjoyable. Prices with captions.

Decorating Is Fun!: How to be Your Own Decorator
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0977787516/102-8352750-7276102

A popular book over sixty years ago, it is now being reissued with original illustrations. A serious book about decorating that does not take itself too seriously.

I have Dorothy Draper's 'Entertaining is fun' and it is seriously a spectacularly great book. So I have high hopes for her take on decor. She was -the- decorator of the early century....Decorating is fun was released in 1939 and this is a reprint of it.

Oooo, The Art and Power of Being a Lady. On my to buy list for this weekend. Thanks Neecerie!

Its a good small book. A lot of it is common sense and probably obvious to anyone -decently- behaved to start with.

But I can't resist books like this...and self help books....someday I may -improve-

Ok...its that time of year (why yes...I get one every year for filling out a health survey at work, they bribe us with 50 worth of gift cards)...and I have my $50 for Amazon.....so I thought I would revive this thread to see what new folks would buy.

So the rules:

Its 50 dollars, no going over.
Ignore the shipping and tax and assorted things, only the selling price counts.

What would you buy?

Eating for Life by Bill Phillips. It's the best cook book ever. Many of the meals can be made in 15 minutes or less and they taste great without a lot of sugar and fat. There are even recipes for making burgers and fries and chip and dip that are good alternatives to the traditional, fat-laden ways of making them.
