Alpaca question

I have a new to me highwayman with essentially no wear that fits great with an alpaca lining. Does the mild it itchiness associated with an Alpaca lining diminish with time and wear?

I didn't find it diminished in my jacket, so I had it relined. If the jacket fits you great, it would be worth it to change the lining. There are cheaper options than sending it back to Aero.

Nor did I and had 3 of mine relined by Aero ( sold 2 VDR's on that were the same ) .... Tartan, Cotton Drill and Shearling were the replacements all much comfier.

It's strange stuff because it feels soft yet has that scratchy / itchy feel when worn like a hair shirt.

I've avoided Alpaca ever since and stuck to Lochcarron wool tartan ( all weights are good .. ) cord or cotton drill .... if I could get some of the Grant Tartan flannel I had in my oilpull Highwayman I'd have that in a heartbeat ... it was the dogs

If you live in a cool enough climate to place an insulation layer between the Alpaca and your skin the jacket might be worth keeping like it is for the cold days. I have an alpaca lined Aero Barn Stormer in the San Francisco bay Area that see no wear

Nope not really... I remember those three button sweaters from the 50-60's that were so cool... Think Sinatra Bobby Darin.. always itchy, especially on a date.

I know that this must be a rarity,though, as it is often mentioned here. Plus I have had friends who just can't stand wearing a wool sweater...but I've worn them often with no irritation. [huh]

That seems very true......and the newer Aero brown alpaca lining is softer than that in my 14 year old Hwyman as well.

A trick you can sometimes use on an itchy fabric is to gently rub it down with a bar of soap or a cloth with some conditioner or fabric softener on. Just a little. De-ionized water can sometimes do the same trick. Apparently it helps re-align the short filaments so they don't stick out and cause the irritation.

+1! I have it in my all wool Aero HB (the grey colored alpaca) and I have no problem with it, and it is very nice for the colder weather.

I agree with HD: my Alpaca causes me no problems, nor do wool sweaters. Of course HD and I grew up in a time when men were men and sheep were afraid.

I've never tried on a jacket with alpaca lining, although wool sweaters do make me itch. I may be an old goat, but I ain't no sheep. lol

I think they might be using different stuff the last year or so? I saw it on the aero message board thing. New, non itchy alpaca.

My Alpaca is the old type--maybe 6 or 7 years.

I'm half Welsh so I have no problems wearing anything that originates from sheep
