Hi everybody! I just wanted to say hi and introduce myself, as I'm new to this forum--though I've been around some of the other Golden Age inspired fourms like COW and The Lost Pages.

All my life, I've had a deep affection for the style of the 30's and 40's--clothing, movies, architecture, etc. I especially love film noir , like The Maltese Falcon and Kiss Me Deadly .

I'm looking forward to posting more here, it seems like a neat joint to hang out at.

Welcome, LuckyLighter
It does sound like we'll get along.
One question however; I keep seeing people refer to COW and I'm completely in the dark: what is this bovine reference?

"Hide, the cow's outside" Abbott
"So what, I'm not afraid of a cow" Costello

Thanks for the welcome, everybody! This is a great joint, and it's really cool to meet so many people with a similar affection for the Golden Age. I'm looking forward to contributing more posts here.

I was a huge fan of Mike Hammer growing up. I can remember when my parents would go out on Friday nights and my aunt and uncle would babysit my sister and me, we would always watch Mike Hammer, right after Airwolf with Ernest Borgnine and Jan-Michael Vincent on CBS. From 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. that was how I spent my Friday nights as a little kid. I have a lot of fond memories of those shows, especially Mike Hammer, which was my uncle's favorite show.

As I got older, I eventually moved on to reading the source material--the novels by Mickey Spillane. I just found a whole bunch of Mike Hammer novels that I found at a used bookstore years ago, and forgot I had. Now I'm reading "Kiss Me, Deadly."

When I first got cable in 1996--yeah, my parents were poor--I was so excited to see that A&E was airing old episodes of the Mike Hammer series with Stacy Keach. I wish they were still on today.

Mike Hammer

One of the two hour episodes of Mike Hammer "Songbird" is currently out on video. There is a scene where Mike is with a firend at a pawn shop looking for a new trumphet. Mike, finds a pile of old fedoras and asks the shopkeeper how much. The shopkeeper relpies $5. Mike says "each?" The shopkeeper says "For all of them." Sort of an insult to fedoras, but what find for the rest of us it would be.

Well, there was a series that aired in the mid 1950's and starred Darren McGavin as Mike Hammer--that was the first TV incarnation. To my knowledge, it was never on video or DVD, and has never been rerun as long as I've been alive.

Then Stacy Keach starred as Hammer in the 1980's on CBS, this time with a contemporary setting, though Hammer still dressed like he was still in the Forties and Fifties, with a fedora and trenchcoat. It was resurrected in the mid 1990's when A&E aired reruns in the afternoon.

Then Keach came back again for a new syndicated series that usually aired in the limbo slot at, like, 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning. I think that is the series that came out on DVD as "Songbird".

So, the Darren McGavin one is the only one that took place when the Hammer books were actually written.
