I think we should put together a list of Golden Era Hunting and Safari gear.

Things like-

- Binoculars
- Outfits
- Pith Helmets
- Writing and Notekeeping Gear
- Weapons
- Lanterns
- Tents
- Traveling Desks
- Maps and Charts

I have to say the thing I'm looking for the most is an old Hunting Rifle, I don't even know where to begin looking. I'd like something I can hang on my wall in my study that looks like I've used it on Safari's. Something like Ernest Hemmingway would use or Allen Quartermain... something like that... my study is going to be Travel/ Safari/ Adventure Themed and I'd like some of this stuff to go in it. So let's get going and find some stuff. Here is my contrubution...

Nick...

That's what I was lookign for except I don't have the money to but one of those rifles but the "look" is perfect.

I am TRULY surprised that no one else is into this post... I hate to beleive that we have a bunch of Sam Spades' and no Indiana Joneses' in this forum.

I started a thread similar to this a couple of months back with little response-
Can't find it now...
Mine was more about wearable gear- for the desert, tropics, Alpine and City-hopping. Adventure gear- what would be on your vintage adventurewear wish list..? Type thing.

English patient meets Indy, meets Seven years in Tibet, meets...

I've been looking at vintage climbing, alpine adventuring gear recently...
All this gear is good for the holiday-ing vintage life-styler of course, not just for fantasy.

I would need-

-a set of desert-suitable tan/khaki clothes
-a fur-felt slouch hat and a wide brimmed Fedora and an Apple cap
-vintage boots
-a set of rugged wollens and a vintage style anorak/parka
-a nice '30s vintage leather jacket
-a set of practical, maybe workman-like yet smart City gear.

I have assembled much of this from eclectic avenues, just need the hats.

I actually really like the Afrika look. My prefered outfit is either low boots with puttees or high laced boots with a canvas top, paired with loose-cut jodhpurs. A light khaki cotton shirt with rolled-up sleeves would go with it. As for hats, I can go either with a fedora sort of like the Akubra Federation or with a more regional style involving pugrees.

For weaponry, I would carry my Smith and Wesson M&P .38 on a belt holster along with the extra cartridges, and either my 1920's Haenel bolt action 8mm sporter or my Mauser K98k along with a bandoleer holding extra stripper clips.

I don't plan to carry any writing desks personally, if there are porters around maybe they could carry them.

Vladimir, have you seen the book 'Khaki Drill & Jungle Green'?

Just as the name implies- British and Colonial WW2 and pre-
tropical, jungle desert uniforms... Africa, India, Burma, New Guinea etc...
A good reference.

I like my Afrika shirt- picture in this thread about 5 posts down-

It's just so classic '30s adventurer- I was so impressed, I bought a feldgrau and a HJ style one too..
They're a medium weight linen- nice detailing. Reenactor stuff.
They're just so Indy bad guys style.

Yes, I saw that. My SS service shirt is the same color, but in cotton and without the pockets and could probably work with an African theme as well.

Have you seen the high-laced Afrika Korps boots? I think they would be perfect. Jackboots and low-boots are alright, but puttees would probably get really hot in Africa.

I prefer the low AK boots- more practical for actually wearing-
My shirt is the same as the one you mentioned but I was trying not to mention the S-word. I really like the linen shirts. There's some really high quality reenactor gear in Germany and England now- really nice quality.

This gut has nice AK low boots- pricey too. His uniform items are really nice.

This one too-

Well I love this stuff.
One inspired gear item would be the bigass canvas water bag with leather trim.
And of course the big old brass compass in leather case.

Great Idea!

Water bag as handbag.
You think up all the cool stuff.

I don't think my wife would go for it. She was pretty chilly when I got her a vintage alarm clock.

As far as a cheaper period piece I would look at a Lee Enfield British .303....There was probably more African game shot with a .303 than with all other weapons/rifles combined.

Just FYI

Especially if you consider the Deutsche Afrika Korps of the early '40s African Game-

A good and flat shooter (if you can find one)is the .303/25, a .303 (usually with some of the furniture removed) chambered down to use necked-down .303 cartridges with .25" projectiles.
A lot of .303s were converted this way post-war in New Zealand and Australia for deer hunting/culling, mountain goat, Tar shooting and of course Kangaroos in the outback. Great combination for the wide-open spaces and from one mountain to the next in the rugged country. The conversion was also due to post-war de-militarisation policy.
A powerful, flat-shooting hunting rifle-
