Hi to all,
here is my AS, it's a good hat for the money.
In these days I've looked it and I'm not very happy about its brims shape.
Take a look:

What do you think about the brims shape, are they correct?
Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

Riccardo.

What are the brim & crown dimensions? The crown looks a bit short for my taste. I like high crowns. What don't you like about the brim? It looks fine to me.

Crown and brims dimension.

Hi Feraud,
the crown is cm.11,5 in the front cm.10,0 in the rear; the brims are cm. 6,5 wide.
I think that the brims aren't good shaped in the rear,I've seen some hats with the brims more up shaped in the rear then mine; but I'm happy that you like it.

Best regards.
Riccardo.

Is the hat very stiff? My Akubra Federation was when new. You can shape the brim if you are not happy with it. A little steam will do the job.

The hat isn't very stiff.
It's quite a soft hat, certanly not like a vintage hat is, but it is better than my priced Borsalino, very better.
I'll never buy another new Borsalino!!
I've a vintage Borsalino, it need to be reblocked...I'll send it to an Italian hatter to do it.
Have you a De luxe Federation?
How is it?
I've thinking about it, I'll buy an Akubra Federation De Luxe for the next winter. Do you advice it to me?

Regards.
Riccardo.

That is a nice looking hat, Riccardo. I agree with Feraud, if you want to chenge the brim, steam and shape it the way you want.

Perhaps an upturn in the back with a nice taper to the front snapped down brim?

Nice hat, Riccardo

I think I see why the brim bothers you, and like the others said, steam it for a few seconds, then roll it gently with your hats. Do it a few times until it looks the way you like it.

As for the Fedoration Deluxe, I only have the regular. But if that is anything to judge by, the Deluxe should be great.

Steaming the brim

Hi all, I've been lurking for a while. This is my first post.

A question- I recently bought a very nice Akubra "Aussie" hat. The tag reads "pure fur." How long should I steam the brim to get it to snap down?

Are there risks to "oversteaming" the hat? I tried a clothes steamer on it for a few seconds but I'm afraid of damaging the hat.

I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

I don't know which model you have, but I think most "up" Akubras have snap brims. That means you might be able to just do it by hand. Try that first. If that fails, or if it's not "down" enough for your liking, hold the felt about 6 inches or so from the steam source and try a few seconds at first. If it doesn't loosen up, try a little longer. The main thing is not to get the hat too close to the heat, to avoid burning it. If the steam hurts your hand, you're probably too close.

I use a pot of water with a cover that has a small vent. When the water boils, I steam a hat, then throw in some macaroni for dinner! Into the pot, that is. :essen:

Thanks, not-bogart, I'll try that.

It's the military slouch hat. It doesn't have a snap brim.

I bought it online and I'm very happy with it. I'll be much happier once I get it shaped.
