Here's a Fed IV on top of the Squatter brim to brim (as opposed to being stacked which would throw off the perspective).

The Fed fits perfectly within the bound edge of the Squatter.

Also some pics of my funky monkey mug with the Willow Green Squatter. I can't state enough how much I like the color.

ScottF, I see that we managed to turn the front of the brim down about the same amount! It seems to me that although I used steam, the edge is trying to curl back up after a few days... In need of a new treatment, perhaps? [huh]

Just sent the money for a squatter, fawn. Pictures as soon as it arrives! I lost my wilderness trekking hat to the Chattooga river. The squatter, chin strap attached will be my new hiking/camping/river running hat. That is unless some of you folk differ. What's the consensus on how tough the squatter is?

I've been wearing my Featherweight Squatter for a couple of weeks, mainly in the mornings to feed the horses & muck the stalls. It seems fairly durable but I've yet to get caught in a good down pour. It may become my hiking/camping hat to replace the wool crusher that I've been using. Will keep you posted...

Good idea to have the chin straps for a river running hat. I've donated a couple of fedoras and probably a few baseball type caps to various rivers :eusa_doh:.

You'll probably want to loose the liner for warmer weather wearing.

I have had a few flat-brimmed hats like this - best suggestion is that when you're shaping the brim, push down from right by the crown, not just the forward part of the brim. Be careful not to steam the sweatband - the leather is very thin and can be damaged easily.

Akubra Drover

My first Akubra, $21.00 BIN fresh from eBay. Sweatband reads Drover but the ribbon looks like the current Mexican rather than the Drover. The brim is 92mm or 3-5/8".

I do it. I does make it cooler, enough to notice. It also lightens an Akubra by 13.5 gm, or about a half ounce.

You can peel the hot-glued parts away carefully most of the time, but if it starts to stick or looks like it's going to carry away some of the felt with the glue, use a very sharp knife to gently part the two while you tug steadily.

When you want it back in, for cooler weather, you can just re-insert it and tuck the edge under the sweatband. It won't shift or come out accidentally - mine haven't anyway. The glue or stitching really isn't needed I think. They might do that so the hat won't become anonymous.

I do it with all the hats I wear year-round, fedora & western. Wish some makers didn't use so much glue to tack them down. I just tuck the liner behind the sweatband when cooler weather comes around. Like WoodFluter said, no real need to reattach.

She decided my beater was better off down stream a couple of weeks ago. I've got an excuse to go hat shopping and the wife can't say boo...as long as I buy her some more river running gear too.

HEY! Fresh from the US Gov't approved digital scale at the post office.
Woodfluter asked about weight difference bewteen the Federation IV Standard and the Deluxe.

So, I just got back from my assignment. Each hat was weighed three times to ensure accuracy.

3.8 oz. Sydney/Fedora
5.1 oz. Squatter
5.2 oz. Federation IV Deluxe
5.5 oz. Federation IV Standard

There ya go
