Here's another look at Bluegrass Green in both sunlight and artificial light.

not sure I understand how knurled knuckles are put randomly into pinches ... the felt either buckles or it doesn't

I honestly have no idea what you are talking about ... so I would have to see it

I think I understand what you mean but I'm not certain how it makes it look "more vintage." I'm usually "intentionally careless by design" when creasing my hats, because I like the random look on most.

I too am in the careless crease camp ... you know that ... what comes out comes out ... but if the felt doesn't ripple , it doesn't ripple

This! I realize this is from an advertisement I just happened to run on to but demonstrates exactly what I was talking about. And there is a pic or two on this forum where someone tried to create it once. Vintage felt or new felt, you will never convince me that it either buckles like this or it doesn't. To me it looks like someone took their big fist & grabbed a hand full. Looks really cheap!

That is exactly how nice vintage travel weight felt reacts to pinches.
The felt on these hats is very thin and very dense .
When pinched or poked that is how it reacts... 100%
Here are a couple examples of my hats
a Dobbs Cross Country and a Dobbs Westward ... both have this type felt and what you see happened when I took my middle finger and thumb over the peak and gave them a tap.... nothing more.
I have many hats that react this way when poked... a Knox or two and a couple Borsalino as well...in my opinion this is the best Felt you can find.
It sounds to me like you have simply not experienced this felt.... which is not uncommon because it is becoming more and more rare due to it being so thin and not surviving time and wear.
I love the look and it is 100% legit and beautiful .
Cheap ? not a chance ... that is what it's all about

I know @1mach1 @alanfgag and @Short Balding Guy all have hats that react this way

I'm going to make a video when I get a sec. so you can see it happen in real time.
It is absolutely the type of felt that hat collectors chase and covet

I believe that intentionally bashing a hat in that manner (when the hat and felt characteristics dont allow it to occur naturally) is a bit of an affectation. I personally would not wear a hat looking like that with a very dressy suit.

so if you had a light weight vintage hat the naturally pinched that way ... you would smooth out the pinches to wear with a suit ?
...wouldn't that in itself also be affectation ?

that is the way these hats were and everyone who owned one wore it with a suit

by the way it would be nearly impossible to smooth out the pinches because that is the very nature of the felt when pinched
