Akubra Coober Pedy colors

I’ve long considered Akubra for everyday, 3+ season utility wear.

I think I’ve decided upon the Coober Pedy. Santone Fawn seems the most “versatile,” but Moss looks appealing. Also, is Graphite available in the domestic US? David Morgan only sells the Fawn and Moss, and it seems Black and Graphite are sold out elsewhere.

Looking forward to hearing some seasoned opinions.

Thank you.

I have a Sandtone Fawn. I remember either a Sand or Sandtone being available. Rodolpho had several including a Bluegrass Green. I don't remember a graphite or black.

What size do you wear?

Have you considered the Akubra Cattlemen? It’s very similar to the Coober Pedy but with slightly different vent holes and crease. Both hats have 3-1/4” bound brims. David Morgan stocks more colors in the Cattlemen. If you are willing to shop overseas for a hat, hatsdirect.com stocks even more colors in the Akubra Cattlemen, including Graphite.

The Cattleman is a fine Akubra, but I prefer the crease of the Coober Pedy.

Do you wear this in the summer? I generally run too warm to wear felt in the summer, but a felt Akubra seems to be a standard "uniform" for folks in Australia, even in the hot months.

Also, I don't think the version from David Morgan comes with the leather band and opal, but rather the half inch ribbon band. Is the opal version only if ordered from overseas?

Where I live I can wear it all but about one month a yr. It is good in the rain with the brim flanged the way it is. I have so many hats I haven't worn it in a while. That's why I asked your size but mine is a 7-5/8.

I always preferred the reddish Fawn over the lighter Sand color. Roldopho's Bluegrass Green looked good also.

I was very close to ordering what David Morgan calls Moss green (I think that's the same as Bluegrass). It's a sharp color which I'm sure varies a bit in different light.

Thanks for the consideration on your 7-5/8!

There is a seller on ebay that sells Coober Pedy's with different creases. Cool looking and might give you more pics to look at and an idea of what you can do with crown & brim if you want. I kinda like the little mule kick in front.

I like the moss green. I have not seen it in person I am wondering if its a little different than bluegrass green.

I bought my last Akubra, Kentucky Rancher, from Austrailian Hat outlet. DM was out of the one I wanted so I called first to make sure they had it since the color I wanted was discontinued and they did.

First of all I don’t have a Cooper Pedy myself but my sister does. She wears it going for evening walks all summer long. It’s a nice looking hat. I have a Coolabah that has a similar crown that is lined with air vents. They are great hats. Sandtone Fawn is a great colour IMO very neutral, vary Australian and goes with anything. I also find the same with green, it’s just a colour that goes with everything. The hat has a good sized flat brim so it gives maximum sun protection. The brim is also bound, from my experience Akubra pounces their hats more when they are bound. That means the felt will probably softer and thinner then their hats with a raw edge.
The only thing I will add is the hat band. With a choice between that lovely kangaroo leather with an opal to a piece of ribbon..... is that really a choice? Opal all the way man.

hope that helps some
Any more questions please feel free to ask.

I agree- opal is the way to go. That said, DM doesn't seem to have the opal band. May have to add myself.

Thanks for the details!

That Open Range is worth studying a little bit. I like that.

I ordered the Santone Fawn from David Morgan. It was supposed to arrive yesterday but the USPS is playing with my hat emotions. :D

The David Morgan version has a ribbon band. Do you have to order from Akubra direct to get the kangaroo band with the opal? (aside from finding one for sale used)

I don't see on the Akubra AUS site where one can purchase the band as an accessory.

I would have just ordered one from Australia. Probably cost more to get a band. I would contact HatsDirect or everythingaustralian to see if they can hook you up.

I may do exactly this. My hat is supposed to arrive tomorrow, but if I want the kangaroo band and opal (and a different color, namely black) I have to go through HD or EA.

How long does shipping usually take from AUS? Just read "Leaves warehouse in 6 months (made to order)" from Everything Australian...

Apart from one case of the dreaded three-month wait for a style/color that had to be ordered from the factory (a Glen Grey Stockman back in 2007), all my hats from Everything Australian arrived within ten days. Hats Direct has even faster shipping... but it's supported with higher prices and heftier shipping charges.

If it’s in stock, under the normal run of things. Not even two weeks. You can read how many Americans are shocked at how quick the hat ships from the other side of the world. But as of right now I have no idea.
I would contact the company’s directly and ask about size and colour availability. Online stock may not be accurate.
That’s my two cents worth anyway

Well, I received my Coober Pedy in Santone from David Morgan today; it's an exquisite hat! But it's got the tone on tone ribbon and now that I've seen it in person, I realize how important the kangaroo band and opal are (or at least a leather band of some sort). But my goodness, what a fit. Pretty much exactly what I'm looking for.

As such, I went to Everything Australian and ordered the same hat with the leather band and opal. The invoice said it ships in 4 months, so I emailed EA to see if this is true. Hopefully that's their basic "disclaimer."

If it's going to be four months, I'll likely cancel and hunt for something on eBay, or I suppose I can just hunt for an appropriate leather band. One thing is for certain, I'm all in on Akubra, and particularly this Coober Pedy. I love the bound brim, the crown height, the grommet/air vents. Seems like a lot of value packed into a not-terribly-expensive hat.

As I'm sure folks here can relate, when you want something like this on your noggin, 4 months is a lifetime!
