Background: having seen a fantastic Wayfarer in natural Vicenza on Thurston's website, I decided that my collection had a hole in that was a perfect fit for it.
So I took a trip to Gala to try one on - I think most people find themselves sitting between sizes and I toggle between 36 and 38, depending on style and era - and get up close and personal, so to speak, with the leather.
Anyway, while I was there, Ken sold me on their new unfinished, mid-weight 'raw' Italian leather. It's to being about four or five shades lighter than the Vicenza, and finished with a light oiling rather than sealed with a top coat.
This means it;s open to elements and will develop character and patina at an accelerated rate. At the moment, it's a creamy, almost latte-ish colour, but with a bit of sun and the inevitable showers, it will start to deepen to a honey-caramel colour.
The try-on Wayfarer in the showroom was an immaculate size-38 in walnut-colour horsehide made by Morgan, Aero's latest young addition to the family and an amazing talent - it was her first shot at making this pattern and was stitch perfect. I was so impressed, I asked her one the spot if she would make my one!
It arrived yesterday - having been thwarted by DHL on Monday - and I'm blown away by the jacket. As you can see, the leather is stunning, though a slightly deeper, double cream colour, and already showing a bit of grain already. I went with antique brass metalwork, just to give a little contrast, and black sateen cotton lining.
Obviously, it'll be a bit more vulnerable than the usual FQHH and this isn't for everyone. But from the examples I've seen of other Aero jackets made from this leather, I think the results will be stunning and I'll update this thread over the coming months to show how it develops character.
No wear pics at the moment, I'll get my other half to do those once the sun comes out again - it was bucketing down here today - but the fit is spot on: slim and high on the arms and a close fit on the body. Anyway, enough chat, here's yer jacket porn:

Yep, it was absolutely intended as a summer jacket, so hopefully, now that we're beginning to get a bit of warmer weather, I can get to work on it. Obviously, it'll have to contend with the rain too. Probably more of a threat than being overexposed to the sun, tbh...

Cheers! The colour is more pronounced than the pics suggest, it's got a more yellow-ish shade. The style reminds a bit of the East-West jackets, though obviously without the spoon-billed collar and aeroplane lapels.

I can already see how it will look like in a couple of months as I’ve seen many pics of different leather jackets makers in that leather tone. Very nice and I like the Wayfarer jacket 30s style a lot. Is it from the same source as their Vicenza HH and how about the thickness and heaviness (same as Vicenza)? I envy you as I have never dared to buy such a bright tone leather jacket! Congratulations from my side and enjoy wearing it! Please show how it develops over time

'Tis a thing of splendor indeed. Interesting sizing, I thought you'd be a 36 . . . mind if I ask your shoulder and chest measurements? It looks fantastic now, I can only imagine how good it's going to look with some wear on it.

It's not the Vicenza tannery. Vicenza's natural HH is more of a buttery shade - not sure if it's coated, as I think it will darken in the sun too. In terms of weight and thickness, there's not much between the two leathers. As far as the colour goes, I tend to think that a little attitude goes a long way, though I'm probably going to invest in some lighter boots. Also, it's a great looking jacket, so all it does is draw attention to it, not me!

The try-on jacket in Gala was a 38, I took a 36. Weirdly, my Good Wear is tagged a 40. Go figure! I'll need to get my other half to do my shoulders etc.

Be interesting to see how things like the oils from your hands etc., create darker areas. You are obligated to document. Judging form the raw hide so to speak I think this is going to be particularly incredible. It really looks truly naked/natural. I’ll be watching!

Very nice indeed. The 'weather-beaten' look it'll take on over time will accentuate nice the Western touch to the design - those front yokes, specifically. I'm very tempted by the idea of something like a Highwayman in a hide like this. Needs regular photos taken on a daily basis so we can really see the progress of its finish.

Wow! This is very cool...Great combination of design and leather choice; the stitching, the contrasting hardware and lining are complementing each other ver nicely. I can’t wait to see this jacket as it takes. Look wise this seems to be much cooler leather than the Vicenza. Very nice.

I have a darn near identical jacket with different hard wear, sleeves, and vincenza vs. the hide you have.

That being said I am very much enamored of it. I still do have a bit of self consciousness wearing it as it does very much stand out when new but I think as the patina develops and familiarity increases that effect should fade.

Enjoy the break in. It's really cool when the leather gets broken in and just flows with your movements.
