THIS IS FANTASTIC!
DESCRIPTION of the Aero Daytona from Thurston Bros.:
This unique Aero original recreates classic late 1940's styling in heavy front quarter horsehide! The classic "D" pocket jacket has four exterior pockets--a ticket pocket on the "D", a zip closing right hand side pocket, a zip closing left hand side pocket, and a smaller pocket on the left breast, all closing with ball & chain zippers.
The cuffs are fitted with Talon zippers and the belt is full length and is removable. This jacket has a full action back that extends from the shoulders to the kidney panel.
The jacket has epaulets, shoulder gussets, a matching belt, and kidney panel.
DESCRIPTION OF THIS JACKET:
First, this jacket is FAR better than the standard Daytona!
The most obvious upgrade is the beautiful sheepskin collar; this is made from the same fleece that Aero uses for its Irvin jackets, so not only is it absolutely beautiful but it's also period-correct,. given that the Daytona is a 1940s inspired pattern.
The other obvious upgrade is the lining--a gorgeous muted authentic wool tartan by Lochcarron of Scotland, in shades of light blue, green, and bracken, with a white and red windowpane overchecking.
A less obvious upgrade is hidden--the sleeves are lined in moleskin, like Aero's jackets for the Japanese market. This will keep your arms warm, won't itch, and makes it very easy to slide the jacket on and off!
This jacket is made from horsehide, in Battered Seal. The leather is wonderful--very slightly waxy to the touch, supple, and easy to wear--it will last for decades and only get better with age. It was produced using the original 1920s tanning process.
The sleeve zippers are Talon, and move beautifully smoothly; they have their original leather pulls. The main zipper is also a Talon, also moves beautifully smoothly, and has its original leather pull.
The original belt can be readily removed; it is attached to be jacket by belt loops, all of which can be unfastened with studs to allow the belt to be removed or added. The studs are all extremely sturdy!
The jacket is just starting to break in and developed a gorgeous patina--Battered Seal is one of the most beautiful of Aero's many gorgeous leathers!
It does have one issue that you likely would never notice, but it was pointed out to me by Canuck Panda, the original owner from whom I bought this, and so I'm pointing it out to you! When not in play the action back is held taut and straight by a horizonal piece of elastic; this is starting to age, and so the line of the action panel on the right-hand side of the back is no longer as taut and straight as it used to be. This is merely a cosmetic issue--and is one I would never had noticed, and can't see even with it having been pointed out to me. Moreover, this is apparently a very easy fix--less than an hour's job for a competent leather repair shop.
Canuck Panda had this made on June 6, 2019. It is in Very Good/Excellent condition--really, excellent condition, but there is the issue I noted above.
Thurston Bros. is currently offering the basic Daytona--before upgraded collar, lining, and sleeves--for $1,529, plus shipping.
I got a VERY good deal on this jacket from CP, which I am passing on here--$425, or offer, boxed, shipped, and insured in the USA. (I paid $400 shipped; the extra $25 is just to cover my shipping to you, but I'm always open to offers!) This really is an absolute bargain, and if this wasn't just a hair too small for me it wouldn't be here!
