A particularly modern themed 1951 film starring Kirk Douglas and directed by Billy Wilder. Wilder is an esteemed director with films like Some Like it Hot, Double Indemnity, and Lost Weekend on his resume.

Douglas plays a former big city newspaper man exiled in New Mexico. He sells his reporting skills for a fraction of their true worth. Seeking a way back to any big city he stumbles into a minor story of a man trapped in a cave in. Considering himself an expert on how to twist and turn facts to satisfy the public, he proceeds to turn a minor event into a major tragedy.
Kirk Douglas plays the main antagonist but most of the characters in the film seek to profit or gawk at the unfolding events.
I will not say anymore about this film but to recommend it.

I've seen it many times. It's one of Billy Wilder's most unknown movies, and a masterpiece. I agree that it was way ahead of its time in its depressing POV. An incredibly bleak and cynical film, with a downright nasty performance by Kirk Douglas. Highly recommended, but don't go in expecting Sabrina or Some Like It Hot - you'll be in a pretty foul mood afterwards!

"When the history of this sunbaked Siberia is written, it will stand for all to see: 'No chopped chicken livers!'" - Kirk Douglas in this film

Great picture, worth seeing.

I saw this film years ago. It is excellent, and Kirk Douglas quite good. Nice period, "almost noir" style.

Thanks for the reminder, I know this film, but had forgotten the details. Funny how you remember scenes, but forget a movie.;)
