A2 sizing and leather

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies and warm welcome.

In my initial post I was torn between a D1, A2 or cafe racer. I am now deep in the A2 rabbit hole.

I have found one on Ebay but just wanted some advice prior to proceeding.

1. It's steer hide. How does this compare to horse or goat? Any red flags.

2. I am size 44-46 in chest. It's listed as 46 so will this be correct or too big/small?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

The first thing you need to do is to measure your chest to determine what size chest you have. Saying you are a 44–46 is not definitive.

Then obtain an accurate p2p measurement of the jacket you are thinking of buying. A leather jacket with a true size 46 should have a p2p of 25 " + -. Of course this will vary depending on the thickness of the leather, but it is a good rough guide. If your chest measures 46" then a p2p of 25" ought to fit you in the chest. But the p2p is only one measurement of the equation. To me it is the most important. For others, maybe not.

In my guide of proper peacoat fitting in the Guides section at the top of the page in the Forums List, I have told how to properly measure one's chest and the proper method of measuring the p2p of a jacket. You can send the jacket measuring instructions to the seller. eBay sellers are often lacking in knowledge about many things, and measuring jackets is one of them.

While the instructions are peacoat specific, they are equally applicable to leather jackets; however, the p2p measurements will be different because of the thickness of the respective fabrics. Use the 4" measure for leather jackets instead of the 2" measure I use for the peacoats. From measuring my leather jackets, I found 4" was fairly standard across all of my jackets.

Amazing. Thanks so much. As a lover of selvedge denim jeans, I have certainly come to appreciate that measurements are not all they seem. Vanity sizing etc.

If at all possible, try not to get hung up on hides so early in your quest because fit is much more important In finding the right jacket.
In many cases steerhide is almost indistinguishable from horse and the two wear very similarly. Goat is more spongy and pliable with a pebbly texture. Goat is probably the easiest wearing of the three leathers, but many don’t like it because of its texture and the fact that it is doesn't show wear and age easily.
As @Peacoat pointed out, you need to know your numbers as well as the numbers of the jacket you are looking at. This is a process of trial and error for most of us as we learn what works and what we like as well.
