Wildlife gets around sometimes on the left coast. A few years ago a sea lion pup wandered out of the ocean, up the beach, across the boardwalk and street, into an apartment complex, and up two flights of stairs before he took a nap on someone's welcome mat.

Wanderlust.

VERY SAD

Story has taken a very sad direction

whale beached & dies
Bottomline:
Durham said a colleague, marine biologist Robert DiGiovanni, was observing the animal when "it suddenly began heavy splashing, hit the dock and then just went quiet."

The whale died about 5 p.m. The end was witnessed by spectators who had been drawn to the dock area in Gowanus Bay by news accounts of the whale.

That's too bad. I've seen whales come too close to the shore and get stuck. Very sad. Maybe it wasn't well when it came close to shore?

It was their backyard before it was ours!
...and yet we're always surprised when wildlife pays a visit home.

well I cant ever recall a whale sited off brooklyn. Altho I have seen sharks off coney island.

incidentally, from EncyclopediaBritannica:
Before the invention of spring steel and celluloid in the 19th century, “whalebone,” as baleen was called, was very valuable. Because it is flexible and retains shapes imposed on it with heat, baleen was used for springs and in products such as corsets, knife handles, umbrella ribs, brushes, and fans.
