What is the maximum amount that can be removed from a suit when tailoring?

For instance I've found a nice size 44S but I wear a 40S, can I get that tailored to me?

No. The coat will be too long. In the end, even with a good tailor who knows how to shorten the skirt, the pockets will be too low and you will end up looking like the teenager who had daddy's old suit cut down. Don't waste your money.
